United Airlines among the latest to charge overwieght Pax

Post by catan man »

We know the debate. On one hand the person with a 25lb child gets charged an extra seat. Why should the person next to you, who is holding an extra 25lbs plus, and who is in effect sharing your seat with you not get charged? On the other hand, why is there not enough room for bigger people? It is known that people are in fact bigger on average than in the past. The seat size came together around the sixties when people were thinner.

I think they should pay double, and be given a bigger seat. Like first class in some A/C.

Call it what you want. You take the room of two, you should pay.

agreed...its about time...
I travel to the U.S. a lot...
I'm 120 lbs, and on most airlines if my luggage weighs over 50 lbs I am charged an extra 50 dollars (that's the minimum charge)...
So my entire weight with bags equals say 180 lbs (including my carry on, lets say 195 lbs)...
meanwhile as I look around there are at least 50 people weighing in over 300 lbs with a bag that's say exactly 50 lbs (no charge), a total of 350 lbs (haven't even included their carry on bag) and they aren't getting charged a damn thing for the extra weight...and I'm not even getting into the fact that this fat guy is taking up a third of my seat...argh
so in terms of charging people perhaps there should be a charge based on the cumulative weight of pax and there bags...as well as a fat section with double wide seats and a blocked off sound proof portion for crying babies...
ooops I've gone too far...

I would say part of this is that the person is self loading freight while the heavy baggage has to be handled by ramp crew.

I fully agree that large people should have to buy an extra seat. The odd person that has an actual medical condition should be of course be exempt. I get really pissed off when I'm on an airplane and the person beside me is spilling over into my space. They let themselves get large, they can pay the expense of taking up extra room.

Even the people with medical conditions should require the extra seat. Let their health insurance pay for it.

Agree with you soufrits, but thing is they're going to be putting you down as 165 + bags on the w+b whether you're a hotsy tot cheerleader or big mamma from the deep south. Tends to just average out, so that's what they charge. Though whether the average weight of the swedish ski team and the dallas football pool is the same is pretty.. uh.. doubtful..

Hey Doc, did you also notice the portion sizes at restaurants? Doesn’t take much to put 2 + 2 together ...

Miss S, I wish it was so!

Yes, they’ve up’d the standard weights, but I wonder if it is enough. I’d like to see airlines using actual weights. Stand on the pad to check in ... computer logs you in & invisibly sends your weight off to W&B world.

I like the idea of some larger seats in Y class though. Charge more for the seat & let anyone buy it, just like J, but persons that don’t fit in a regular seat must buy the larger seat.

In a perfect world using pax actual weights would not only be choice and the best as far as safety goes...but guaranteed some fat ass will form a group protesting that having to be weighed before a flight is some sort of human rights violation...

I have two kids. I honestly thought the overhead would be best for them if they're crying trying to get to sleep. - no distractions, quite, can't move around. They should make little cribs for the overheads for babies.
