Winds hit CYRO - lots of damage
Not for the faint of heart folks. They're estimating about 18 damaged, 10 write offs.
IF YOU HAVE AN AIRCRAFT AT CYRO CALL IN AND ASK FOR THE CONDITION OF YOUR AIRPLANE.
Unfortunately you wont be able to drive in and check until morning.
It wasnt a pretty sight.

Is there any pictures? Use to work at Rockcliffe. That's really to bad. Any word if their club planes are damaged? It looks as though WZA has been pretty damaged but that's based only on grainy webcam footage.

Re: Winds hit CYRO - lots of damage
I wonder how that works insurance wise. If one plane flips over and hits another plane causing a domino effect would the first plane be responsible for all the damage? Would it be each plane that hit the next pays up?
Not a good day to be unisured or just barely insured with basic Liability and no Hull.

Re: Winds hit CYRO - lots of damage
Very sorry to hear it. According to their web site http://www.rfc.ca/, 24 damaged and 1/2 probably written off with one club plane written off and one damaged.
CYND (Gatineau) did not appear to have any damage when I was out there this morning except for a few planes pivoted a bit in their tie downs.

Re: Winds hit CYRO - lots of damage
From what I've heard GWZA is a definate write off. A cherokee parked to its right flipped right over it, clipped the tail and ended upside down under GPHV's wing.
One aircraft - what looks like it used to be an ultralight or homebuilt- is now folded over a fence leanning against a tree.
Another ultralight took out a 172's wing, landing upside down and puncturing the fuselage.
Many aircraft shifted in their tie-down spots, and what looks like a paint can has left its mark on the pavement and at least one aircraft.
One aircraft, it looks like its landing gear collapsed under side loads from the wind, two more were upside down, after the first one broke away from its tie-down, and struck the other aircraft.
Those were the major ones.
Snapped a few photos, may upload some later.
As for calling the airport 'CYRO' rather than 'Rockcliffe/Ottawa' sorry.
But Google could have answered your search in 0.16 seconds.

Several write offs - the ultralights were especially hard hit. Here are some of the photos that I took today. Tony's Mile Hi took a direct hit from the willow tree. The old willow tree is now down and ready for the chipper but the clubhouse is still standing with a few more dings in the roof to add character.office_supply wrote:From what I've heard GWZA is a definate write off. I that the same place the museum is? Did any museum a/c get damaged? I know there are a couple of neat a/c outside, like the prototype Dash 7.

Re: Winds hit CYRO - lots of damage
I have got some photos I found from some people who work at CYRO. These are not my images. The damage is quite severe.

Re: Winds hit CYRO - lots of damage
The winds were quite bad. I got a notification on my blackberry at 3pm that there was a front moving through Michigan, winds at 70 mph and causing downed hydro lines, power outages, a few roofs ripped off, etc... it was into was into the GTA by 5pm.EngineGuy wrote:Were all these planes tied down properly and the winds were just that bad?

Re: Winds hit CYRO - lots of damage
From what I saw:
The red/blue on white cherokee that flipped over GWZA into GPHV was tied down, but it looks like the anchors gave way. At least one anchor was pulled out, perhaps out of the cement.
Another aircraft, sheered the tie-down anchor. Several tie-down ropes did break as well.

Re: Winds hit CYRO - lots of damage
I believe you about the tie down ropes. I was reading in the paper this morning that some roofs in the Ottawa area had been torn right off, trees up rooted and winds in excess of 100Km/h were reported. What was scary was that the winds literally went from calm to 100Km/h+ in almost a space of 5 seconds.office_supply wrote:From what I saw:

Re: Winds hit CYRO - lots of damage
No, none of the museum aircraft appeared to be damaged. It was a very strange, isolated phenomena - some aircraft were picked up and tossed around while the aircraft beside them were unscathed.xsbank wrote:I that the same place the museum is? Many of the flying club members were in the aviation museum at the yearly RFC awards dinner when the wind struck. The police were in the museum parking lot checking the cars for damage as we left the dinner, and told us about the aircraft being damaged.

Here's my gallery of pictures ...
http://picasaweb.google.ca/jfdoyon/Rock ... nApr252009
Looks like my Warrior is damaged after all, there was nothing obviously wrong, but it turns out the elevator controls seem off, I suspect bent rods or pulleys or something like that ... obviously, the force of the winds have wreaked havoc on the controls. Some planes didn't even have locks on them (I did, but it was shaken partially loose).
I suspect we're gonna find more damage as time goes on, the more insidious, invisible kind ...

Re: Winds hit CYRO - lots of damage
These are a few of the ones I snapped.
From what I can tell, it looks like two of the most major ones happened because the anchors failed.
Mine faired out well, though that could change once Red looks at it.

Re: Winds hit CYRO - lots of damage
I'm kind'a pissed at piper for not providing a "pin-based" control lock on my plane. The Cessnas have them, and I think I saw at least one 140 cruiser that was using a pin.
My POH says to use a belt to tie the yokes together, but I have a thing that binds the pedals and yoke together, this one:

And it came loose
Probably because there were points where the pedals moved when the plane left the ground, or the nose wheel lifted.

Re: Winds hit CYRO - lots of damage
Here are some photos from the Ottawa Citizen. I've never seen damage to this extent in the Ottawa area.

Where are all the gloom and doomers, they could easily spin this as a global warming issue.
