6 Delta RJs parked at YYZ - why?
Hey all
This morning I was doing the whole Rapidair thing and while taxing to the gate in YYZ i noticed 6 RJs in Delta colours without a name on the aircrafts and no visible registration - I know they were Delta because of the tail paint scheme. They were parked in front of the Skyservice hangar, just north of de-ice pad 6. The time was 9 am-ish, and we taxied right beside them due to the land 33L/takeoff 33R setup.
Anyone know why that is?
Cheers

Those were Comair's RJs. Theyve been parked there for quite some time now and are in the process of being returned to Bombardier (or maybe parked out in the desert) as Comair cutback on their fleet. At least this is what I was told.

You should see how many of them are parked in Atlanta. Dozens of them.

Their are about 15 different regionals with 4 different paint schemes. (UAL-AA-US Airways-Delta "Connection")
It gets confusing.

add 3 or 4 more parked in YYC off taxiway uniform (east end). Definetly in Delta colours, CRJ100 or 200's

maybe with the current currency exchange the ramp fees are much cheaper than american aerodromes ?
seen a US regional carrier landing a Q400 in YYZ the other day (maybe United livery) , so it's possible the Q400 is finally displacing the RJ in todays economics like it was intended to do in most comparable sectors !

20DME, that's what i was thinking, thought YYZ was one of North America's most expensive airports...
They can't be old enough for desert parking to be worth it, could they?

I just read an article about parking planes in the desert.
A fellow who operates one in California is overwhelmed by airlines parking part of their fleet because of the economic downturn. UAL is parking all of it's 737's, Delta is parking the majority of Northwest's DC-9. I imagine that these desert storage facilities are running out of room.
I speculate that the GTAA is giving Comair a good rate on parking their birds for the short term?

They are off lease aircraft and belong to Bombardier. Skyservice was doing inspections on them but that has ended.

From what I've seen, there's still tonnes of space down there....It will a while before enough aircraft are retired to fill up the currently available space...let alone building extensions to the existing boneyards.Nark wrote:I just read an article about parking planes in the desert.
