Converting normal to decimal time chart?

Post by Hawkeye4077 »

Hello, I remember seeing such a chart at my old flight school. I was wondering if someone knows where to find it.

Thanks a bunch

NOTE: Air Time and Flight Time should be recorded to the nearest 5 minutes, or to the nearest 6 minutes when using the decimal system as follows:

0 to 02 = .0
03 to 08 = .1
09 to 14 = .2

15 to 20 = .3
21 to 26 = .4
27 to 32 = .5

33 to 38 = .6
39 to 44 = .7
45 to 50 = .8

51 to 56 = .9
57 to 60 = 1.0

Every 6 minutes is .1 of an hour. Why not take the amount of minutes you flew and divde by 6?

Apparently not. If I go do a 2 minute flight I am supposed to write 0.0 in the journey log.

Not quite true, if there was no flight time to be recorded then there is no need to make an entry.

Some times the trips are so short on the coast scheds that we can log .0 air and .1 flight. This is only to prevent the next take off being from a different place than the last landing.
PCA will not allow a .0 air time. They insist all flights be recorded with a minimum of 3 minutes (.1)

Actually this time thing is interesting because you can fulfill the five solo take offs and landings in .1 air/ flight time for the " recency " requirements as laid out by TCCA.

I always record time to the nearest five minutes and then put it in decimal. Makes addition and remembering times easier.

5 min = .1

10 min = .2

15 min = .3

20 min = .3

25 min = .4

30 min = .5

35 min = .6

40 min = .7

45 min = .8

50 min = .8

55 min = .9

60 min = 1.0

We do the conversion before we put the times in the log book, for example; time up - 7.1 time down 7.4. Then the airtime is simply the difference in the two. It seems strange at first but I find it simpler after a while. I make a lot fewer errors in the book now. It makes for less numbers to be questioned after the fact too.

back in my union days we used to get 8 miles per landing, which added up when you do 40 in a day.

Why convert at all? The AIM says you can use hours and minutes in both the Journey Log and your personal Logbook.

Can't say I have eaten KD in years. And my house is quite comfortable but I appreciate that you are worried about my accommodations and diet though. Good to know someone cares. :smt014
