Flicker Vertigo
Enlighten me, oh wise ones, as to what "everybody knows", and the nonsense Transport had us repeat for years.

Last I heard about that one was that it has quietly disappeared from the TC curriculum (sp?). The few cases that were attributed to "flicker vertigo" were actually traced back to people suffering from mild epilepsy.
This is all third hand info so if someone has something concrete confirming the above or otherwise I'd like to hear it.

I've landed into the sun (NO, not actually INTO the sun, you know what I meanEver landed into the setting sun ?
Never actaully experienced it, mostly it's just the flicker that's annoying. Last I heard, possibly not true, is that there is no such thing.
I heard the same. The few cases that were attributed to "flicker vertigo" were actually traced back to people suffering from mild epilepsy.
Here's an interesting link that talks about flicker vertigo - and a bunch of other interesting conditions as well.

obviously you don't get it every time you land into the sun. I think it's very angle and prop condion specific. I did have a definate flicker effect one time on approach into the sun with a Caravan. The torque was perhaps 300lbs so the prop was in about a corase a setting as possible in flight. There was a very pronounced flicker effect. I didnt' experience any urge to bank with the prop or make pitch movements. I do see how if it had been more severe an illusion might be convincing.
You will see a flickering effect quite often at night while taxiing... but we're talking VERTIGO here.
By the way, it's a good way to check your tachometer...
