American News

Post by 040hurts »

Is there anybody else out there who, when watching American news, (CNN, Fox etc) gets the urge to beat the reporters with heavy mining equipment...? Or is it just me?

I have a news flash for you... your country is fighting two wars, your economic system is falling apart, you have tens of thousands of people who cant afford medical treatment, and a dozen other MAJOR issues.....

Who gives a Crap if Joan Rivers just won Donald Trumps celebrity apprentice?

And to the expert Doctor that went to "Ground Zero" of Swine Flue... In the time you spent bringing us a "Code Yellow breaking news" story about this pandemic, thousands of Americans died due to obesity related illnesses. ( Which spread quite contagiously by the social norm of poor diet, no exercise and excessive TV )

Big deal, i made one spelling mistake. It amazes me that people have nothing better to do on this site than criticize when someone makes ONE spelling error. And I stand behind my statement of what a disgrace America is.

I realize they're not all like this, but this is pretty bad. Plus I thought it was funny.

And Nark, how does this make you feel? Just curious... because if I were you, I would be a little angry.

You should visit countries like Nigeria or ex Zaire to put things back into perspective

Well.....it all comes down to context....spelling error....no big deal....calling other people stupid......no big deal.....calling other people stupid then turning around and making an 8th grade spelling error, not really a big deal, but well worth pointing out the irony.
As for American news dumbing down the nation, yeah, I can see the point. Who cares about the 'First Dog', or which celebrity is in rehab/jail/bed with Brittney Speers. However, this isn't an 'American' thing, its a media thing in general.

The fact that you think it's a news show makes me scratch my head.

What further makes me scratch my head is that you think the CBC, CTV and whatever other news channels you canucks have up there are newsworthy.

What is the litmus test concerning what is "news" programming anyway?

Other than Nark and Hedley, what sanctimonious little pratts you are.

The USA is still the beacon of hope and freedom for tens of millions of people who would move there in an instant, and we are exceptionally fortunate to have that country as our closest ally and trading partner. We are far, far more alike the United States of America than some of you little jerks with memories 90 days long would care to believe.

Of course, I'm biased right? ... after all, I've got American relatives, thereby making me "unclean" and nowhere as enlightened as the posters above.

When I see this type of drivel, I'd sincerely really like to sit down and have a few beers with these people and have them calmly explain the root of their anti-Americanism....because I've never been able to understand it. Each time, it just turns out that the misguided individual thought he/she was just being "trendy and cool" with the comments, not realizing that it is precisely these type of postings which cost us dearly.

The dozens upon dozens of "pointed and probing" conversations I've had with sanctimonious jerks that think Canada is so vastly superior to the US, that "we" are in a position to make fun of them, or criticize them, leaves me wondering what form of psychological disorder the individual has which must be compensated by knocking someone else to make themselves feel better.

Since 9-11, I have not let a single individual make anti-American comments within earshot go without challenge, because I'm genuinely interested in why they could develop thought patterns which manifest themselves in speaking ill of our best friends, mothers & fathers, cousins, brothers, aunts and uncles.

As I have written before, here is a quote from retired Major-General Lewis McKenzie "We live next door to the last remaining Superpower, along the world's longest undefended border, who buys 80% of everything we manufacture, and some of my countrymen can somehow turn that world enviable position into a problem."

It is evident that we are seeing a generational thing here on Avcanada between the older generation who grew up friends with the USA because we are so alike in our culture.

And the younger generation who seem to be brainwashed to hate the USA.

You might notice that the Canadian media love their new leader. If he changes the US to his way, will the Canadian media like the whole country then?

Suddenly I appear to be anti-American.

I'm not. However I am against their lousy television news. Hence my initial comment.

And for the record I spent 8 weeks working in Djibouti. Goggle that.

I hate some of their crappy TV as well. I also hate some of our Canadian TV.

That is one of the wonderful things about our countries. You can produce some awful crap and call it entertainment or culture and its allowed.Try that in any number of other countries.

The best way to stop that kind of tv is to shut off our TV's. Can you all do that?

Just Another Canuck:

Understand something ... I used to work in the media and was quite successful within it. I could record a conversation with you and edit it so you looked like the most stupid idiot on the face of the planet, and label it something to the effect of "Stunned Canucks Who Can't Find Their Own Asses To Wipe Themselves."

A comedy show which sets out with the purpose of making someone seem stupid is very easily done. The "journalistic work" done by Michael Moore is a prime example where material is taken out of context and assembled to represent a preconceived story line presented for its marketing appeal rather than a documentary presentation of sequentially presented factual events.

I don't think that the 'quality' of America is what is at issue here. This is more a problem of the media playing to the lowest common denominator (at least in the states. In Canada the media plays to the current verison of political correctness as writ by the CRTC). People want to be entertained, and most people find other people's foibles and personal lives entertaining. This is why trivia takes up so much band with in the media; it sells.
It's not American bashing to point out that the networks produce a great deal of stuff that is entertaining crap. Oprah, Dr Phil, Octo Mom, Obama's Wife, Obama's Dog, etc.....It's like mental potato chips; not really that good for you but fun to consume. I'll even concede that some of my favourite shows fall into this category. I love Mythbusters (things go boom) and Deadliest Warrior (heads go pop). This is not to say that Canadian networks are any great example. If American programing is potato chips, Canadian programing is high fibre; it's good for you, but it's hard to choke it down. Little Mosque on the Prairie....great theme...let's all get along with each other and understand each other....but it's about as fun to watch as ....well, it's just not fun to watch. The Nature of Things, again good for when you feel like thinking, not so good when you just want to relax.
