FAA spokesman Ian Gregor says a pilot reported the collision around 5:45 p.m. Monday.
Gregor said one of the planes was a Cessna 172 and departed from Long Beach. No information was available about the other. It was not clear how many people were aboard either plane.
Firefighters and Coast Guard cutters immediately began searching the ocean about five miles south of the Queen Mary off the coast of Long Beach.
The reported crash site is only nine miles southeast of the Torrance Airport.

Re: LA midair (light aircraft)
shitty deal.
a friend of mine had a mid-air in australia last year (a nordo a/c and her, both on final) luckily both made it in...doesn't appear this will have the same outcome unfortunatly.

I hope everybody is ok.
Get your eyes outside everybody, just because you make a position report every five miles doesn't mean you are safe.

Or on the flip side, just cause somebody makes a position report doesn't actually mean they are there...

Re: LA midair (light aircraft)
This is my neck of the woods, and unfortunately this doesn't surprise me.
I can tell you from experience that position reports are a rare thing outside the flight training word. There is a ton of GA flying going on here outside the flight instruction realm...
The area sits right on a V air route that a lot of pilots like to ride (read VFR) because it by-passes Camp Pendleton's restricted airspace. Just speculating.
My prayers are with the families.

Re: LA midair (light aircraft)
Don't forget my position report 50 miles away from him. Wouldn't want to encrouch on the airspace with his name on it. See and avoid people.Lurch wrote:floatplanepilot wrote:"ABC, where are you?"Lurch wrote:I hope everybody is ok.

Re: LA midair (light aircraft)
Sorry to hear this. As far as see and avoid, well, it not always possible to see another aircraft in time to recogize and avoid (or even see them in the first place).
Or another option. You make the calls but the other dude doesn't and you're wondering how much longer your luck is gonna last, cause you saw them after they passed you and they were within 100ft even then!FREEFALL wrote:Or the other option; no calls and wondering why another a/c just flew by you so close you could the silohette of the crew!!
