must leave southern ON !
hi, i'm new on the site.
i was just wondering if you guys have any helpfull suggestion for a low time private pilot. i have 70 hours and i'm building time towards a commercial licence. are there any suggestions on things i should get while i build time ie: multi engine, IFR ? i want to get out of southern ontario as soon as possible and want to know what the employers are lookin for in terms of minimums to be employed as a dock hand. towards flying employee. thanks

Do the rest of your flying on floats! That way when you finish your commerical off you might be able to get a job right off the start. Then you won't have to do the dockhand job for very long if at all. During the winter get UIC to pay for your upgrade to get your CFI. Working around a flight school you might hours in various planes for free and maybe a deal on getting your multi and IFR.
This way you are working during the summer and have something to fall back on during the winter.

no, sorry, but they have a website...www.sudburyaviation.net ? something like that.
Marg Watson-Hyland is the operator there...nice lady.
I believe I saw something on their site about financial stuff, so you may be able to get financial aid there too.

i'd have to agree that commercial time building on floats is the way to go-assuming you actually want to fly floats in the first place-
kill two birds with one stone: there's no sense in putting on a whole bunch of float time on top of your 200 hrs. insurance mins are high now but this'll put you a bit closer anyways.
and sudbury aviation gets my vote for sure. if you camp in the park just beware of bottle kids overnite. good times.
let the ifr go til you get thru a couple of seasons on floats. i've seen a lot of guys get UI to pay for the initial IFR, which gets me a little choked b/c i didn't have the presence of mind to do it myself. UI won't pay for an ifr renewal so keep that in mind if you think you need one right away.

thanks for the suggestions. i have one major problem i have to work out though. i fly out of brantford and they don't do floats. i think i will be forced to do my commercial on wheels. will this be a major problem when it comes time to finding a job. or will it just delay the situation ?

What we were suggesting is that you finish your training on floats...ie:get some of your commercial time on a float plane...which would give you a bit of a jump start if you want to work on floats in the future. (Thus avoiding the cost of a "bush course" and speeding things up for you)
Many places offer 50 hr. courses though, if that is what you're looking for after you get your commercial. (Sudbury Aviation, Geogian Bay Airways are closer to S. Ont)
