Medical Q
Got a quick question regarding the medical renewal.
Last year I did my medical July 8, 2008, so it was set to expire July 31 2009. I just renewed it today, June 24.
I remember reading something in the CARs about how if you renew it within a certain number of days (60, or 90??) you keep the old expiry date. So, does this mean my medical will expire July 31 2010, or is it only good to the first day of the 13th month (June 30 2010)?
Thanks in advance.

Re: Medical Q
Thanks Snoopy.
Looks like this is what is applicable here:
404.04 (8) The end of the validity period of a medical certificate that is renewed in accordance with subsection (1.1) is calculated from
(a) the day on which the preceding validity period ends if the medical examination for the renewal of the certificate is conducted within 90 days before the end of that validity period; or
(b) the first day of the month following the day on which the medical examination for the renewal of the certificate is conducted if the examination is conducted more than 90 days before the end of the preceding validity period.
So, it's my understanding that my medical should still keep the July 31 2010 expiry date since I renewed it within 90 days.
The thing which confuses me though is that I originally did my medical in August several years ago. Last year I renewed it in July, so I technically should still have kept the Sept 1 validity date (or Aug 31 expiry date). This wasn't the case though. According to the medical records at Jazz, my medical expires July 31 this year. So something tells me in the eyes of Jazz and TC, my medical now will expire June 31 2010, even though I renewed it within 90 days.

Re: Medical Q
Following along the same lines..
If a private pilot under 40 gets a medical done and is valid for 5 years and at year 3 this pilot turns 40, does this person need to get a new medical?
Basically, once you get a medical it is set to expire at a given date but does crossing the 40 mark now change your previously held expiry date or is it set from the age you receive your medical on?
And C-HRIS, I would have to agree with you on what I am reading that not only should your most current medical be due July 31, in fact I think it should still be due Aug 31. You mention that Jazz and TC see it as your medical expiring sooner but if you call TC and have a chat with them I'd be certain you can get a new medical issued with the correct dates on it. The benefit of being able to renew within 90 days is there, so just make sure you get the benefit of it.

Re: Medical Q
I ran into this very issue with my ATC medical at 40. The 2 year validity of my pre 40 medical was good even though I had turned 40 about 8 months after the medical was done.B-rad wrote:Following along the same lines..

Thanks, I appreciate it. Good to know "tie goes to the ." still shows up sometimes in aviation.

I called Transport to ask this same question a few months ago. They replied that my original expiry date is still valid. So, my Class 3 is valid through 2013, even though I turn 40 this year.
Re: Medical Q
According to my doctor (who's been doing av-medicals for 40 years), the date the medical is done is the determining factor for the "turning 40" crowd. There has been much debate on this issue, and I have been told differently by TC.
According to Dr. Wing, if you're 39 when you get a Cat 3, you're good until you're 44. Likewise, when you're 39 and you have your Cat 1 medical the day before your 40th birthday, you're good for the year (not 6 months). After that it's every 6 months. He has stated he's very clear on this issue.
TC has explained the other scenario to me as the one to go by, however it was clear to me it was being interpreted from the chart (all 3 times that I called). The wording of the CARS leaves some question.
Sorry if this of no help. I've gone with my doctors experience on this one. As you might find out, sometimes TC has different interpretations depending on which number you dial.
