If something nasty happens firewall forward midflight, that causes you to suddenly descend, assuming she was properly maintained does the insurance cover it or are you sol?

It depends on a ton of things,
Im certain that if there was to be a big claim and associated payout, the insurance company would find a problem
with your logs, or paperwork somewhere and not pay.

I'm not sure what you guys are talking about.
If you have insurance and you have an incedent / accident, the insurance company pays - either a partial settlement or, if it's a write-off, the total amount it is insured for, (less the deductible, in either case).
They may chose after the fact to go after sombody for negligence or fraud, if applicable, to try to recouperate their out-of-pocket, but they have to pay.
You don't pay insurance premiums to get dgew'd around when it's time to cough up.

Sorry I should clarify.
Lets say it's relatively uneventful, and you dead stick down on the runway.
Do they pay to repair/overhaul the engine?

No. They only pay for the damage caused during the crash (if any), but they don't pay to fix the engine problem (or whatever) that caused you to have to make a forced landing. This will be explained in your policy.niss wrote: Do they pay to repair/overhaul the engine?
Also bear in mind that if you make a forced landing somewhere that you can't fly out of, there is a limit to how much they'll pay to recover the plane. Again this will be detailed in your policy.

Its the same as when you get flooded by weather, before you make your claim get the toilet to overflow with one of your kids toys and blame the 8ft of rain water on your toilet, then your covered, if you say the truth, well, your on your own. In retrospect that has nothing to do with your case, maybe you should have taxied into somthing after.
I'm pretty cynical with insurance, it's a scam but you don't want to take the chance of not having it, unfortunatly they are not there for you, they are there to make money.

Re: Touch Wood....God Forbid.....Ptooey Ptooey
Yes, it is sort of funny that if you do a perfect job before and after the engine failure and save the plane, but if you wreck the plane, you get a new plane.
Re: Touch Wood....God Forbid.....Ptooey Ptooey
Yeah, now you point it out it is a bit strange. If you total the plane they'll pay the insured value minus the deductible, which basically means you save the $30k or whatever it would cost you to overhaul the engine (assuming it's more than just a dead cylinder).ahramin wrote:Yes, it is sort of funny that if you do a perfect job before and after the engine failure and save the plane, but if you wreck the plane, you get a new plane.
A while ago there was a story about someone doing a perfect forced landing in a field, and they left the plane there overnight. They came back the next day to find it wrecked after a storm. Perhaps they were actually done a favour.

No, nothing bad happened yet... touch wood.dashx wrote:Did you do something????

The only thing that scares me worse than crashing the plane, is not, and then having to pay for the engine out of pocket.

Niss,
I think your are doing more damage to your engine by not flying. Long periods of inactivety are hard on the engine.

I know of a fellow, a pretty cool customer. He lost the
prop off his airplane during some aerobatics - broke the
crankshaft.
Now, he's a pretty good stick - he could have easily
force-landed his aircraft, without any damage to his
aircraft. But then he'd have to foot the bill for a new
prop and engine.
So, after a moment's thought, he jumped out and
pulled the D-ring. For his own safety, of course.
Aircraft was totally destroyed. He got a check for
the entire value of the aircraft.
Queried afterwards, he expressed doubts as to the
controllability and airworthiness of the aircraft with
the missing weight of the prop on the nose shifting
the C of G dangerously aft.

Re: Touch Wood....God Forbid.....Ptooey Ptooey
I hear ya, I really should have pickled the engine. We had to pull the cylinder this annual, and everything looked pretty cherry inside (crank, cam, etc) so I am pretty lucky (again touch wood). But that said, If I am looking @ another winter of no flying, I am fogging her.Jungle Jim wrote:Niss,

Re: Touch Wood....God Forbid.....Ptooey Ptooey
Niss, why would you not fly in the winter? You live near
Toronto, which has the mildest winters in Canada, with
the exception of Sarnia and of course Vancouver.
Do they not plow your runway? If that's the case, pickle
it! It's not hard or expensive - you can (legally) do it yourself!

I expected to fly during the winter (still trying to get that elusive PPL) but with it getting dark @ 5 that rules going after work, and its hard to nail down a Saturday with good weather & free etc. I really should have fogged her, but hind site being 20/20. When I get my ticket, I plan on going like gangbusters.

Re: Touch Wood....God Forbid.....Ptooey Ptooey
Have you considered the recreational license? If I was learning to fly today, I would probably go for it instead of the PPL. You probably already have the hours for it, and it might just be a matter of doing a flight test. You could get your PPL later if you really wanted it.niss wrote:
