500hr f/o Medevac requirement, all on aeroplanes?

Post by povertypilot »

Just a quick question to see if anyone knows the technicalities of the 500hr f/o medevac requirement? I have around 400hrs in aeroplanes and around 75h in gliders. Does anyone know forsure if these hours count for anything when it comes to that requirement, I'm guessing they don't, but it's worth a shot. I tried calling TC but they didn't really have a solid answer for me, they just suggested it may be the same as what you can count towards a licence, which is a max of 50h from what I remember.

Also, kinda along the same lines, guys with gilder time, do you put it on your resume? I have been including my time for now, not sure if it's hurting me or helping me...

Cheers

They are different categories of aircraft - think helicoptor.

Whether or not your employer counts it is a function of
how many other people applied for the position with 500
powered fixed wing hours.

500 hours is an insurance function. Go ahead and list the glider time. Given the economic times, you'll have competition for any job. Perhaps they'll admire your initiative.

I know at the company I work for *ahem*. That its 500hrs Powered for the medevac stuff and 250 of it PIC (powered). Go ahead and list the glider time, it cant hurt, but it's not gonna help much towards the TT requirements.

I've not heard of FOs needing 500 hours for medevacs. Is it in the CARs or is it an operator/insurance requirement?

Its a ministry of health requirement to have 500 hours TT, to get your air ambulance license. I was at 400 hours with 100 King Air 200 time doing medevacs in Nunavut (where there is no 500 hour requirement), but they wouldnt give me an exemption and thus had to build the last 100 hours to meet the requirement. Its not a transport thing.

I don't think I've ever seen the word "powered" on a job ad. Anywhere. If they require 500 hours flight time, just ad the glider, or for that matter swing wing time to your total. If it ads up to 500 hours of flight time, well you DO have 500 hours flight time. Follow?
Sometimes, it's better NOT to ask certain questions? :smt040

Lol.. that's kinda the way I've been operating up till now.. I guess it won't hurt to try applying anyway, not like I'll get a job anyway with the way the industry is right now, but at least they'll have me on file..

pp,

the best advise I was given about applying for any job, was to apply
for the jobs you want. Don't worry about your total time. And do everything
you can to set yourself apart from the pak.

Besides I would rather hire a smart modest hard working person who is trainable.
I have flown with some terrible 4000hr pilots.

I started medevac flying with 600hrs and got a left seat ride with under 1600hrs.
Its more about your work ethic and ability to learn.

Best of luck

Actually Rowdy, it's just 500 hours. Could be on a balloon.

Hmm, maybe I'm wrong, thought I'd seen it in the medevac procedures/policy binder, but it has been a while

The 500hr thing is a requirement for Ornge. Not just the company itself, but also all companies doing medevacs in Ontario, flying for Ornge.

This requirement does not apply in Manitoba. I had 250hrs when I began flying medevacs there. I'm not sure nowadays, but I wouldn't think it's changed at all. However, in Manitoba to be a captain you need 500 multi pic time.
