Anyone want to go to vegas?
I would like to go on a reasonable long cross country flight, I am thinking Edmonton, Alberta
to Las vegas. Looking for liscenced pilots who would want to split the flightime in new cessna 172SP with glass cockpit rented froml local school. Total flight time would be about 20 hours return. Estimated cost split between 3 pilots $950 or around $1500 each if it was just two of us not including hotel and food of course. Mountain flying experience would be an asset to go
the shorter route or we could go around the mountains. In order to log PIC time you would need to be checked out at the school, short flight if you are current on the cessna 172 Anyone interested please let know...
I am 180 hours total time Private pilot with night rating

I did Calgary - Vegas - Palm Springs in a 172 a few years back, and Calgary - New Orleans and back the next year. Great way to build time, gain good expirence (decision making) and a lot of fun.
Highly recommended.
I would love to go, but just don't have the time.

Thinking California might be a possibility too if anyone is interested in taking a crack at the crazy Class B terminal area around LAX.

It's not that crazy, you'll have plenty of fun !aaronj231 wrote:Thinking California might be a possibility too if anyone is interested in taking a crack at the crazy Class B terminal area around LAX.
Re: Anyone want to go to vegas?
Agreed it's not so crazy, just pick up flight following a ways out and they'll then give you clearance when you need it all the way through the Class B
Re: Anyone want to go to vegas?
Thanks for the advice guys! I might have one person on board, any one else? We'll be taking a brand new 172SP with glass cockpit, only a couple hundred hours on it so it would be a great time building experience in a modern plane.

Did ZBB -> Vegas when I was building time still. Great time, you will love it! Just be careful when you leave to check density altitude, we had a little issue climbing out in our 172 when it was smoking hot. Double check your Transponder before you go to make sure that it is working well. We had ours clunk out in Vegas terminal airspace and where ordered to immediately go to a VFR reporting point and then exit the TCA through the shorted route! Luckily just as we where getting to the Bank of America building, the fix, it came back and we where allowed to continue. Check out some of the smaller airports they are great friendly people and you will see some interesting things. The bigger ones will have service like you have never seen before, it will be hard to go back to flying in Canada.
Cheers,

I doubt you could do it today, but i sure had fun flying down the strip, low level
Eights around the towers on the Boulder dam might be frowned upon now as well ,oh well another freedom lost.
They will not even let private planes fly low level in the Grand canyon from Lake Mead anymore, damned unsporting of them.
Area 934 is boring never seen any flying saucers playing around, just a lot of dust and heat.

This is one of the nice things about flying in the US. Even pulling into an FBO in a 172 they roll out the red carpet for you.200hr Wonder wrote:The bigger ones will have service like you have never seen before, it will be hard to go back to flying in Canada.

Re: Anyone want to go to vegas?
One great thing about Vegas right now is the hotels are unbelievably cheap. Everybody is running sales, especially the brand new mega towers. Don't think you need to book an off brand hotel to get cheap. The big name brand towers are super cheap these days. If you are into the nature scene at all, think about renting a car and driving to Zion National Park in extreme sw Utah. IMHO probably the most beautiful National Park in the United States. Only about 2 hours or so from Vegas, and a whole different world scenic wise. Vegas outdoors and out of town looks like a nuke test site. Zion is crazy beautiful.
