Yup, I suppose you could look at it that way, but I'd never go work there again. Most of the guys were ok.

Haven't been on here very long, but I would still like to add my two cents.
I do enjoy airplanes in general, but in the end, it just becomes a job like anything else.
I enjoy driving around too...Maybe a job with Fedex or Purolator would be better. Could be making double, and no worries. Not really a life and death situation if you really screw up and the package you are delivering is two hours late. I guess the quality of life and in most cases, the pay is what gets to me the most.

I'm a newly licenced AME and I have a pretty comfortable lifestyle. In the last year and half I've been able to pay off 15K of debt, save 7000$ for my RRSP and TFSA as well as take a trip to Vancouver and Europe which was all paid without incuring credit card dept or using my savings account. I live in a nice house, have nice furniture eat well and I don't live pay check to pay check. So being an AME has been financially good for me. Yes, I work evening shift (11:00-22:00) but I get 3 or 4 days off a week, I live in a small town, but I'm involved in my community, so I meet lots of people and have lots to do. It's all about knowing what's most important to you and making it happen...

So is your company hiring? Sounds like they treat thier people better than most in this industry. I don't personally know alot of AME's that can live that well. Good for you...Maybe things are changing in aviation??!!

Wow wrenchingirl...

I know an AME that is just like you (well he's had his licence for about 4 years). He has a brand new sports car, his own house, his own furniture, I am pretty sure he doesn't live pay cheque to pay cheque ....

and he has his own cat........

but

he lives in a big town......

And he's still single........which would explain a lot.......

And already has a few endorsements too.......

It was all about timing........And it always will be.....

Being in the right place at the right time.........

I'm not gaga about airplanes and hate loud things, but I love my job, have great pay, and have never been laid off in this industry.

I've had many people ask me about my opinion of getting into aviation. Part of me thinks of the thousands of people who complain. Complaining is a virus.

Than I think about how good aviation has been to me. And it owes me nothing.

Well, you are right, complaining is a virus, but no one here is really complaining, more like compairing...and in some cases venting. It seems that the AVERAGE AME would have trouble living as well as the AVERAGE diesel mechanic, electrition, and in some cases even the average drywaller and truck driver. Pay and benefits is just an example, someone said earlier that management and CEO's can be a real pain aswell, and I agree. I guess that this is not always the case, maybe I'm wrong. However, it seems to be common. I love airplanes, and enjoy the work, but it is also something I could enjoy in my spare time. As I get older, I find that I am thinking more about vacations, RRSP's and such. I suppose my timing has really been off  So yeah, given the chance I would bail.

Interesting results.

Over 61% would bail if given the chance.
Does'nt surprise me, and hearing what I do around the industry, I'd say it's pretty close, maybe even a bit on the low side.
The "it pays the bills" crowd probably just need a little more time in the oven, and the lovers, well, whatever.

Anyone know how the schools are doing right now?
