Current Type

Post by BTD »

I'm on layover right now and getting kind of bored in a hotel so I thought I'd see what type and how long people have been flying their current aircraft.

For me: Metroliner- 1.4 yrs, 1100 hrs on type.

Anyone else?

I can't imagine just flying one type of aircraft -
that would be sorta like eating the same meal
for breakfast, lunch and dinner every day.

I am current and instruct in over 10 wildly
different types of aircraft including SEL, MEL,
flat piston, radial piston, jet, etc. They all
fly pretty much the same, actually.

Yup the laws of physics and aerodynamics never change from one airplane to the next.

I remember one night going to the hangar in Calgary to fly the nightly bag run to Winnipeg in the Navajo and damned if the thing didn't have a flat tire and there was no way to fix it so I phoned the owner of the company and he said take the Cessna 402.

I had not flown a 402 before so my co-pilot and I took the POH to the restaurant and read the things we needed to know about it and got in and flew the bag run for several days in it.

I found the 402 to be far more stable on instruments than the Navajo and was disappointed when we had to change back to the Navajo.

Could you do that now?

The most difficult thing about flying is knowing when to say no.

After over a half a century of flying I can not remember even one trip that I refused to do that resulted in someone getting killed because of my decision not to fly.

No I think they use a Beech 1900 for the run now. Wouldn't fit in a 402.

I didn't know you could do that. I just finished reading LRA from AIM, just for kicks and read the following just last week:
AIM:LRA wrote: In accordance with CAR 401.08, every applicant for, and holder of, a fllight crew permit, license or rating shall maintain a personal log
Mind you, I stopped short of reading the quoted CAR. It's not the first time I've seen someone say they stopped logging hours.

stopped logging hours
Couple points:

1) AIM is not regulatory. You cannot be charged under
the Aeronautics Act with not complying with the AIM -
only the Canadian Aviation Regulations, and

2) there is no CAR that say you must log every flight
you make, in your personal logbook (try to find it -
it doesn't exist).

If you look at CAR 401.08:

http://www.tc.gc.ca/civilaviation/regse ... htm#401_08

It says you must log hours in your personal logbook
for two reasons: if you want to upgrade to a higher
licence, or for "recency".

If you look at CAR 401.05:

http://www.tc.gc.ca/civilaviation/regse ... htm#401_05

it says that you only need to log one flight every 5
years as PIC to prove recency.

Note that there is considerable latitude under CAR
401.08(2) as to the format of a personal logbook -
I suspect many people here would be surprised at
to what meets the requirements of the regulations.
