Suaad Mohamud sues Canadian Government

Post by Siddley Hawker »

Did anybody expect anything different?

http://toronto.ctv.ca/servlet/an/local/ ... ntoNewHome
"I don't care about the money," Mohamud told a Toronto news conference Friday. "I'm only going to court so this never happen to another Canadian citizen."
Right. It's your privilege to sue the Government for an injustice, either real or percieved, but don't insult my intelligence with comments like that. :x

pretty self explanatory, make it dear enough that the minister puts in clear guidelines. Bureaucrats are infamous for following the book as they don't want there pensions threatened. They took her passport wrongfully, and then turned her over to kenyan authorities, like it or not canadian's of any race, color creed are covered.

Because that is the way our culture settles disputes, through monitary compensation - no different than divorce, or injury settlements.

Good on her, I hope she wins, this was brutal.

I wonder what you folks who are so quick to jump on her would think if she were white....

Perhaps a bit of thought before posting - Siddely - might produce a bit different perspective. I wonder what you'd think if it were you....

Oh right, it never will be you.

I don't think anybody's disputing that the government deserves to be sued or that she isn't justified. But it would be nice just once for someone to be honest and not say they're doing it for future Canadians caught in the same situation. If it happened to me I would sue their a** off and be quite clear that it's retribution for what they put me through.

Who would argue with that?

Well,

I do find it interesting that everyone assumes from an article that she IS doing only for the money... After seeing several interviews with her, and knowing my own motivations, I choose to look at it the other way. I think it's probably a case of both sides holding some merrit... retribution and prevention.

It's possible. But let's say for the sake of argument that she knew beyond a shadow of doubt that whatever she did would not effect the government's actions in future cases like this in any way. Would she still sue? I certainly hope so because I sure would.

Now let's say the government took immediate steps and proved to her that what happened to her would never happen to anyone ever again. Would she cancel the lawsuit because the government learned their lesson? I doubt it.

It's easy to tack on an altruistic reason when you intend on suing anyway. But you're right, maybe she really does want to make sure it never happens to anyone again.

(And again just so we're clear. I am not criticizing her at all for suing because she deserves every penny she gets out of those incompetent idiots)

I guess we'll never know.

Shit situation anyway you slice it though. I know when I'm in some ugly places working or traveling, I'd like to believe either of the Gov'ts who've issued me passports would be there to help. I hope I never have to find out.

STL should I ever sue the government for whatever reason you can be damn sure I'd be up front about it. I would not be on TV spouting oh-so-righteous bs about preventing a recurrence.
Oh right, it never will be you.
Snide remarks aside you're probably right. According to her interview on The National last night I'm too white.

If you saw her passport photo you would be guessing too. It really didn't look like her. Plus she had one of those burka things on so that adds into the mix. I dont know why people are even allowed to have govt issued photos taken with that stuff on.

If I was fucked over my government and some lawyer came to me and said I could make a mint, and he'd do the case pro bono, I'd be all over that shit!

Don't tell me you wouldn't either.

I don't have much problem with her being "detained because she doesn't look like her passport photo".

But what was this "conclusive investigation" that Canada carried out to determine that she was an imposter and to throw her into the Kenyan prosecution system?

CBSA is supposedly "working on a report" to explain how that happened.

What working? They have known for weeks that this was coming to a head. And they still don't know the reasons?

Dual citizenship is bullshit for one thing. Any bets the whole thing was a setup to make a killing off the government? It would be pretty easy to do.

Every once in a while around here I read something so intellectually stimulating that it gives me pause to stop and think for a day or two - just not this time.... Good grief.

+1. Now -1. Does that put you back at zero for the topic then? How do I know where you stand now, are you on the fence again?

I'm unfamiliar with the ins and outs of this particular rating system...... :smt017

As I understand the system, you're voting on a comment, not on the thread. I could be wrong. The -1 I gave you was your lame attempt at an insult against someone(me) who didn't share your opinion on the matter.

Oh, I get it now.... (I think I got it before too....)

It has nothing to do with sharing my opinion, I could care less whether you do or not, it's agreeing with a blanket statement made prior which is almost laughable in its simplicity. That's all...

Anyway, back to the topic at hand.

What's laughable about having the opinion there shouldn't be dual citizenships? Either you're a member of a country, or you're a member of another country. If you want to be a part of one, you should have to renounce your loyalty to the other. I think a great majority of our current cultural problems are due in part to this practice.

But like you said, back to the topic.

"He who serves two masters has to lie to one.

It's black or it's white.

You're good or you're evil.

You're right, or you're wrong.

You're rich or you're poor.

See a trend here.....? How have we become a society so trapped by simplistic answers to complex questions? It's a sales job, little more, and it's what will kill us in the end, I swear.

Citizenship is not some sort of gang membership, and particularly in the last century or so it has become a very complex issue, one not explained or understood through naive oversimplified statements like "dual citizenship is bullshit." Profound insight there Aerobat - really...

Anyway, I'm sure I won't be changing your opinion, and breakfast is calling my name.

The government says Suaad Hagi Mohamud gave wrong answers and contradictory information in three separate interviews with Canadian officials in Kenya last May, according to court documents filed in Federal Court. The documents were filed in response to a motion for costs by Mohamud's lawyer Raoul Boulakia.
In one interview with the Canadian High Commission in Nairobi, Mohamud indicated she was a student at Humber College and was studying fashion design. But in another interview, she denied it and said she was only thinking about going to school at Seneca College.
The documents allege she lacked knowledge about Toronto, where she had lived for 10 years. She couldn't name Lake Ontario, and even though she took public transit to work, she had trouble explaining the acronym TTC, the Toronto Transit Commission.
She didn't know that the acronym for her Toronto workplace, ATS, stood for Andlauer Transportation Services. She also couldn't name the current or previous prime minister and was unable to describe in any detail how she obtained her driver's licence.
The documents also allege she gave a wrong date for her son's birthday and couldn't provide details on the circumstances or place of his birth.
Mohamud also provided an incorrect date of her marriage, saying first that she was married in 2006, which contradicted the July 4, 1996, date on her immigration application. Mohamud divorced her first husband and married a Kenyan man in December 2007.
The Canadian High Commission officer who conducted the interviews said Mohamud looked different from her passport photo, that she was six or seven centimetres shorter than her driver's licence stated and that her signature wasn't the same.
By the end of the second hour-long interview, the officer suspected he was talking to an impostor, possibly Mohamud's younger sister, according to the documents.

Three separate interviews, huh?..... call me wacky... you can't come up with your only kid's birth date... where he was born... you're suddenly mysteriously changing height... something's not scanning.
