PPC/PCC/Type Rating

Post by flyincanuck »

Just need to clarify some stuff here...

The difference between a PPC and PCC (702 operator):

PPC (prof check): required once every 2 years. Basically a flight test on the aircraft you are (or will) be flying. It tests your knowledge (systems, etc) and ability to fly the plane.

PCC (comp check) required once a year and includes stuff like company ops, emergency training, TDG, contamination removal, etc.

I've read the CARs and just want to make sure that what I've extracted is correct.

Also, when would you need type rating as opposed to a PPC? I was under the impression type ratings are for min 2-crew a/c no?

Thx in advance for the help :)

Type rating = anything high performance.

Your licence should say something like All Non High Performance Single and Multi Engine Blah Blah Blah

So to fly anything high performance you need a type rating. High Performance used to be VMO/VNE 250knots or more unless that has changed.

Yup PPC is Pilot Proficiency Check
PPC is Pilot Comp. Certification

Type rating needed for High Performance Fast Stall Speed or Fast max speed OR two pilots required by type certificate, not operating rule.

I asked this last night. Do you have to be employed at a company in order to get a PPC or a PCC? I was always under the impression that one can't simply buy a PPC because they have to be hired at that place first. Or do companies but you on some sort of waiting list and "pretend" you work their then take your money and give you the PPC?

Hey guys,
well Pimper, everyone can get a PPC regardless of what you do..however if you buy a PPC just so that a company will hire you, your trash so don't ever buy one.
second, correct me if I am wrong but I have always been under the impression that PPC's have to be renewed every year unless your ops manual stats that you can do the 2 year PPC, as I say correct me if I am wrong.

in a 703 ops, a PPC is good for 2yrs w/ an anual company check (PCC) at the end of the first yr.

Okay, thanks for the info guys. I think I got this sorted out now. And no worries...I'm not buying a PPC! 8)

As for the validity:

"Validity Period
702.67 (1) Subject to subsections (3) and (5), the validity period of a pilot proficiency check expires on the first day of the twenty-fifth month following the month in which the proficiency check was completed."

Careful now boys and girls.

Don't mix CAR 702 with the other CARs. Yes 702 is the first day of the 25th mo. 703 and 704 are the first day of the 13th mo. There is an exemption for 703 and 704 which can under some circumstances extend the PC to the first dayof the 25th mo.

For 702, you need a PPC if you are flying pax in IFR flight. Otherwise, you need a PCC. The PPC expires first day of 25th month, while the PCC expires first day of the 13th month, following the training.

For 703, you can get a PCC if you are an F/O on a twin (cargo/pax) or are flying cargo ops as PIC. If you are flying as PIC in night VFR or IFR with pax onboard, you need a PPC, whether its a twin or single. The PPC and PCC are valid until the first day of the 13th month following the training.

For 704, you need a PPC, regardless. It expires on the first day of the 13th month following the training.

For 705, you also need a PPC regardless. It expires on the first day of the 7th month following training.

A type rating is required in 2 cases:
1. You are going to be flying a high-performance a/c. A HP a/c is defined as one with Vso> 80kts and/or Vne> 250kts.
2. You are going to be flying an a/c that TC has designated as a 2 crew a/c.

Unfortunately, I cannot comment as to the training contained within a PCC/PPC/type rating, as I have never gone through any of it. The CARs Standards spell it out nicely though.

Hope this helps,

Chris.
