WJ emergency yyc?
Just wondering if anyone had any details. Heard them on the radio and I only caught the second half of the conversation. I guess electrical fire? Seems like everything is ok though!
Re: WJ emergency yyc?
They got the best PR in the business....I doubt you'll hear anything about it.
Re: WJ emergency yyc?
I was in a 172 on the arrivals frequency coming back into Calgary from Springbank when this happened, the initial call indicated a burning electrical type smell in the cockpit, the crew did not declare and emergency and just requesting priority into Calgary where they landed uneventfully. Radio calls sounded calm and collected.

Emergencies happen all the time, likely won't hear a peep about it unless it was critical and the media got ahold of it.

Pilot reported an electrical smell in the cockpit. No emergency was declared but tower rolled the equipment anyway.

Re: WJ emergency yyc?
I'm curious why the crew didn't declare an emergency. In my mind a potential onboard fire of any kind ranks right up at the top of the list of what qualifies as one.

From AvHerald:
Incident: Westjet B737 at Calgary on Sep 9th 2009, MFD failure and electrical smell
By Simon Hradecky, created Monday, Sep 14th 2009 20:51Z, last updated Monday, Sep 14th 2009 20:51Z
The crew of a Westjet Airlines Boeing 737-700, registration C-GWSE performing flight WS-540 from Calgary,AB to Ottawa,ON (Canada) with 117 people on board, observed the failure of the upper Multi Function Display just after the 80 knots call during the takeoff run and decided to continue the takeoff. I know that in an situation such as this decisions are made a split second
and I ask this for no other reason but to enlighten myself and learn.
I don't know what V1 is on a 37 but im just curious why a reject would not have been called if it was "just after" the 80 knot call. Also, what is the difference between "requesting priority" for landing and and declaring an emergency. Wouldn't the tower hit the crash alarm regardless due to the declaration of smoke in the cockpit just to cover his butt?
Glad everything worked out and compliments to the crew for a job well done!

Re: WJ emergency yyc?
I think the difference is the lack of the word "mayday" which in turns creates a havoc of paperwork for everyone involved

Re: WJ emergency yyc?
With all transport category aircraft, once above a certain speed it is considered a high speed rejected take-off (RTO). In the Boeing 737 this speed is 80 knots to V1 in which RTO will only be initiated for an engine failure, fire, or the aircraft is deemed unsafe to fly.Black Cat wrote:I know that in an situation such as this decisions are made a split second

In the 737NG he upper Multi Function Display has the engine instrumentation and will automatically switch to its backup screen (lower screen). With this failure you would continue the takeoff, complete a non-normal checklist and continue to destination.
In WestJet’s case it seems there was an electrical smell and they elected to return to Calgary. All by the book.

By the book....I guess that's....ah wait.....nevermind....that's a whole new can of worms...In WestJet’s case it seems there was an electrical smell and they elected to return to Calgary. All by the book.
