Save someone calling you their pet peeve...

Post by Dagwood »

So, after reading the other posts about pet peeves, lack of airmanship, and so on, I was thinking of posting times when I did something nice for another pilot. Let's share the times we didn't tick off another aviator. Avcanada doesn't have to be grouchy all the time

So, one day, I was flying IFR into Muskoka, and just after calling into the zone, we hear a plane call in starting up number 2. I figured "Hey, I'm just up here building time anyway, and if he's starting number 2, he's burning more gas than I am. Timmins Radio is going to make him wait on the ramp until we are down. Why don't I ask for a hold so he can get out in front of us!"

So I asked for a hold, and Timmins radio gave it to us and let the other dude out below us and on his way (he was flying a Citation btw). That was my good deed that day

Our airstrip has no taxiway off the west end so if you land anyone coming in or taking off has to wait while you backtrack. The other day a friend of mine was ready to taxi for the runway with his L-39 as I was joining down wind so I just popped up another 500 feet and let him have the runway while I watched him go.

If I am flying my sons plane and the airport is busy I just use the grass beside the runway.

Nice, positive action instead of the usual negativity on here that I have to admit to being a part of from time to time.

I'll often let light aircraft out in front of me on departure so they're not messing around in my wake turbulence.

Also, if I know a conflicting aircraft has a sched to keep, I'll usually let them in or out first.

Just the other day a pilot landed with me holding short. I assumed I would wait until she backtracked the runway back to the terminal, no biggie. She was nice enough to go to the opposite end of the runway and hold in the turnaround bay until I took off. That was swell.

The other day I was parked in a tight ramp. A B1900 landed a few minutes later. When they were done unloading the cargo and the pax they realized they couldn`t turn onto the taxiway without being pushed back because I was parked in front. It was raining a bit and the ramp guy was fueling a grass mower ( AS350 ) so I went to push the c-310 out his way so he could leave.

The girl at the FBO gave me a hot coffee after that and I ended up having her number.

Be nice people!!

The most difficult thing about flying is knowing when to say no.

After over a half a century of flying I can not remember even one trip that I refused to do that resulted in someone getting killed because of my decision not to fly.

I was doing circuits one night with a few other planes. As I turn base, the runway surface condition truck pulls up to the hold short lines. I did a full field circuit to let him out and do his thing. I figured the poor guy didn't want to be waiting all night watching people fly in circles.
