Folding utensil means reform school for 6-year-old

NEWARK, Del. (AP) — A Delaware first-grader who wanted to eat lunch at school with his favorite camping utensil, a combination of folding fork, knife and spoon, now faces 45 days in reform school.
http://cnews.canoe.ca/CNEWS/World/2009/ ... 86-ap.html

Hundreds of people were expected to attend a school board meeting Tuesday evening to object to the suspension of 6-year-old Zachary Christie from Downes Elementary School for bringing the camping utensil from home.

The folding knife is banned as a dangerous instrument under the Christina School District’s zero-tolerance policy in the student code of conduct and officials said they have to act regardless of his age or what he planend to do with the instrument.

Zachary’s mother, Debbie Christie, is appealing her son’s suspension and said she’d prefer that the district’s policy take into consideration a child’s age and intent.

“I understand why they have it, but I don’t agree with the implementation of it,” she told NBC’s “Today.”

In an interview on CBS’ “Early Show” on Tuesday, Zachary said weapons don’t belong in school.

“I agree that they shouldn’t bring dangerous weapons to school but I don’t think the punishment should be this bad,” Zachary said. “It’s not fair.”

Zachary is being homeschooled for now.

“I do sometimes miss my friends and want to go back,” Zachary said.

State Rep. Terry Schooley, who sponsored a bill to give districts more flexibility on punishments, expects a crowd at Tuesday’s school board meeting.

“This has gotten really crazy. It’s ridiculous,” Schooley said. “There are going to be hundreds of people at the school board meeting. It’s going to be a circus.”

Am I missing something here? Did the child hurt anyone with his spork/knife? or did he wave it around violently when told he couldn't use it? If he gave it up when asked to, I don't see what he did wrong...

Did the mother know the multi-tool was in his possession? Probably not... therefore, why should she be responsible if no one was hurt. If someone was hurt, then yes, she should be responsible. Did the child know he wasn't supposed to have the tool?

I carried a multi-tool in my pocket quite often because I rode my sled or motorbike to school... and I just liked to carry it. You could say it was part of my attire. I understand that kids shouldn't carry this shit anymore, but this 45 day reform thing is craziness. I feel bad for the kid.

In my grade 7 class, a kid did a project on gun safety and brought in his old man's rifle to demonstrate. No big deal.

How times have changed.

I remember in grade 4 I went to school as a 60's greaser for Halloween. My Dad gave me a pack of smokes as a prop. My teacher was cool with it but the librarian wasn't so pleased. They took the smokes away. It didn't result in any kind of punishment though. I think Dad just did it to get a laugh. At the end of the day they gave the smokes back so I could return them to the old man. Now days they would probably cal social services.

Then again we used to take our .22's down into the valley to shoot gophers after school. My guess is these days they would have had the swat team from Regina down to Estevan if kids were doing that.

naw there was dirt biking, fort building, fishing. All that combined with watching wheat grow was enough to keep us out of trouble. :-)

After they said we couldn't use .22's in the valley we started using gopher traps. Now that is as boring as watching wheat grow waiting for one of those to spring. We started using bows because they made less noise so no one complained.

Wrong. This is what happens in a society that believes that weapons commit crimes... that blames weapons for the actions of their owners.

When I was a kid I went to a one-room school heated by a pot bellied wood stove. There was an axe beside the wood box in the porch for chopping kindling to get the fire going in the morning. Not a single kid was ever decapitated.

Niss ... you have no idea of how gratifying it is to make a nice long range shot involving lots of hold over due to extreme distance and windage. The sound of that hollow point round hitting a Gopher is just too delightful for words.

Regrettably, an undersized vocabulary limits my ability to convey just how much fun it is eradicating them from a cow pasture. Therefore, watch this youtube video of some Good 'Ole Boys in Saskatchewan and you'll get the drift of this gopher shooting thing. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0wjL5UKuG4U

In a scene reminiscent of something from "Kelly's Heros," http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6A2ttNBz938 I would roll into a farm yard and be greeted as if I were General Charles De Gaulle liberating Paris. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GllaQgZM40M

We would fire off a brick of 500 rounds in a day with a very high percentage of hits, and some very hot barrels. One of my favourite fantasy scenes to simulate and act out was one where I and my fellow Los Angeles Police Dept Officer stumble onto a liquor store holdup in progress, one of the perps takes a hostage and the sniper detachment has to take him out ... good clean fun.

"No dangerous weapons allowed in school"

I hear pens can be used as a stabbing weapon. Do they have pens at that school?

I have also heard of doors being used to crack open human skulls. Do they have doors at that school?

Do they have glass windows at that school? Pushing people into glass with extreme force is usually deadly.

The question shouldn't be what is a weapon.

What isn't a weapon? Everything, anything can be used as a weapon.

A t-shirt, underwear, lingerie, a computer keyboard, a usb cable, etc.

If you can see it, feel it, hold it, its a weapon.

Weapons are everywhere. Even the air is a weapon.

Yup ... a nice big Community Pasture ... a full Section plus. Lots of rolling hills, so you could drive to the top and hold the high ground against those cannibalistic, Communist gopher insurgents. Like the Chinese hordes at Kapyong, South Korea ... they came in waves. Sometimes they would almost over-run our position but a quick mag change and we are safe once again.

Yup ... gopher shooting ... what good clean Prairie Boy fun!
