Re: Cops overreacting, UWO, yesterday
Thank you for posting all the information we need to make an educated assessment on the above mentioned arrest. Clearly nothing could have happened before this video. Yep it really is that cut and dry.

According to this, they were campus security, and not police officers.
UWO defends violent arrest captured on video

School officials at the University of Western Ontario spoke out in defence of their campus security guards on Thursday after they were caught on video arresting a student with questionable force.
Nonetheless, a school spokesperson confirmed the case would be reviewed by local police in London, Ont.
A video of Wednesday's incident - which happened on school property -- was posted on YouTube, an online file-sharing site.
In it, three officers are seen pinning the man down on the ground while punching and kicking his body several times.
"Stop resisting, you're under arrest," one guard yelled over and over again.
A crowd of students are seen in the video standing by and watching the arrest unfold, some taking images with their cell phones.
Elgin Austen, the head of campus police, told reporters Thursday he didn't see "anything out of order" with the level of force the guards were using on the suspect when he arrived at the scene.
"It was being conducted consistent with the Ontario Police College and the training that officers have there," he said at a news conference.
He said it took several security guards to apprehend the suspect who he described as a "strong individual." He said the man "was creating safety concerns" and the officers had a responsibility to maintain a safe environment.
He said people who view the video without context "may not understand what the officers were actually doing."
The incident began in the upper levels of the social sciences building. A suspect barricaded himself inside a room and appeared to be "disoriented," Austen said.
"Eventually everything came down to the main floor," he said.
Campus officials describe the student in question as being 6'2" and weighing more than 200 pounds. He was taken to hospital for observation but then released into police custody.
A spokesperson for the university agreed with Austen that the situation had to be taken into context and reiterated that campus security was trying to keep students and faculty safe.
"The view of the video itself is somewhat disturbing without knowing the context of the full situation," said Gitta Kulczycki. "In terms of what were the officers trying to do -- let's recognize what was occurring."
However, she said whenever there is a situation of this nature, there is an automatic review of the incident.
"We will certainly cooperate fully with London police as that occurs," she said.
Irnes Zeljkovic, a London-area resident, has been charged with mischief under $5,000, assaulting a police officer, resisting arrest and escaping lawful custody.

After watching the video, I'm saying everyone was in the wrong. The guy was obviously resisting...if he wasn't he would have been face down spread eagle on the floor. But on the other hand, there is no way in hell those rent-a-cops should have been hammering on him like that.

Some drunk guy carrying around a knife i'll bet. If the fuzz wants to arrest you, you're GOING TO BE ARRESTED. Take it like a man or get your ass kicked is the only two options. this guy chose the latter. It's his own fault

Re: Cops overreacting, UWO, yesterday
I agree. Perhaps if guys would just stop fighting back and accept the fact that they are being arrested, we would not hear about so many "violent" arrests. People in these situatuations need to stop and think a little better (of course if they are drunk that is not going to work). For example, the whole Robert Dzekanski (is that spelled right?) thing at YVR. If he had calmed down, and just tried his best to calmly resolve the situation with security, maybe he would still be alive and we would'nt be going throught these hearings. (Now don't take this as me approving of the police actions here as they did seem to jump the gun pretty bad, it is just as an example.) If this guy in this video had just laid down and quit fighting there would be no issue.Take it like a man or get your ass kicked is the only two options. this guy chose the latter. It's his own fault

Why does it take 5 guys and a bit of beating??? Go find a 6'2' 200lb man and ask him to get on the ground and try as hard as he can to prevent you from pinning him and cuffing him. Not as easy as some would have you think.

Re: Cops overreacting, UWO, yesterday
I don't think that will happen as I try to avoid having a mouthy, righteous, holier than though, arrogant, and provocative attitude and demeanor when dealing with: a) people in a position of authority, b) people who have the means of beating my ass.cpl_atc wrote:You are mistaken if you think that your opinion of me matters to me in the least.niss wrote:

You defend the indefensible, like usual... Here's hoping you get your ass beat by the cops one day, and then we'll see how your snot-nosed tone changes when it comes to matters like these.
Here is a fun fact! I have yet to be tased or beaten by the police. I wonder why? Could it be because I don't break the law or pose risks to others? Could it be because I am respectful when dealing with the police?
You have the arrogance to say I defend the undefendable? You show us a clip of a video of a guy getting shit kicked with out knowing what happened and automatically say he doesn't deserve it, and that the police/guards are wrong.
For all you know the man was holding the head of an 8 year old girl he just raped. Does he deserve it then? You don't have a fucking clue what happened before this video. All you see is a guy getting his ass kicked and you automatically assume the guy is completely innocent.
3 people you do not @#$! with: People who handle your food, people who cut your hair, people who uphold your law.
I have no doubt that there are many cases of police brutality and abuse of power, but here is the difference between you and me (other than the fact that I am not a sanctimonious douchebag on a crusade), I have a respect for the people and the badge and don't go looking for people to crucify in situations that don't necessarily warrant it.

Why would you post that? We wouldn't want the truth to get in the way of a good story, what would cpl_atc have to bitch about if the guy was violent and resisting arrest?rottentomatoes wrote:There, full story:

Nark:
Good intercept and post of that intel.
It would be nice if cpl-atc were to post the particulars of his run-in with the trusty "Boys In Blue" so we may better identify with his potentially legitimate circumstance. Who are we to say?
My basic crowd control training taught me there is just no substitute for a sharp, solid blow to the kneecap..... be it with a rifle butt or a baton. That usually stops a bandanna-wearing, street-rioting Molotov Cocktail maker in his tracks, and makes 'em yelp for mommy. Often, some Joan Baez type comes forward and tries to drag her man back into the crowd ... always adds to the fun of taunting and name calling.
They usually have a tough time driving their flower-festooned Volkswagon Micro-Bus home after that peace rally.
Unfortunately, I never got the chance to fire the bean-bag gun, or touch off any rubber bullets. CS gas training was a treat though.

Re: Cops overreacting, UWO, yesterday
I never claimed there needs to be no scrutiny, however what you are doing is not policing the police, you are witch hunting.cpl_atc wrote:As for not fucking with people who "uphold" the law, guess what happens when police are allowed to operate without scrutiny, and without being called to explain their actions? You end up with a force like the RCMP, which has over time begun to exhibit the behaviour and characteristics of a secret police force; investigating themselves, never finding any wrongdoing, and resisting all calls for reform.niss wrote:3 people you do not @#$! with: People who handle your food, people who cut your hair, people who uphold your law.
As for the UWO incident, it doesn't matter what the guy had done beforehand. The law does not permit police officers to dish out retribution based on what they think or have been told when responding to a call, and certainly not after the point at which the six officers on scene had him pinned to the ground. He was not armed and posed no threat at that point.
Judge, jury, executioner is not the police's role, it is prohibited by the very laws you claim to respect, and the courts have consistently upheld this principle. So don't tell me that I should consider what the guy may have done before the tape started rolling, because it doesn't matter.
And as far as this video is concerned there is allowance. You assume this was retribution, this was a large, strong, belligerent person who was not allowing himself to be arrested.
I live in a world where police need to be respected but monitored and controlled, you live in a world where every criminal is a victim and every cop is a mobster.
If the both of us spoke to cops with the attitude we exhibit towards them on this forum who do you think is going to be the one tasting a baton? Maybe if less of the people getting arrested where like you we wouldn't have these videos online all the time, and those that were put on youtube would be the legitimate cases of abuse.

Re: Cops overreacting, UWO, yesterday
I would ask, what situation did the security guys prevent?
What was that guy trying to do next?
What would have happened if the security did nothing?
What event did the security guys stop from happening?
Did they stop something that could have ended up similar to this?

Or did they stop something that could have ended like this?
