Any suggestions on free webmails with POP access that could provide an alternative to Gmail?
I'm through with the Hotmail/Outlook Express combination and would like one of only a handful of specific account names as well.
As far as privacy goes, I would rather use PGP/GnuPG than take any chances with any e-mail provider when things get sensitive. The main problem is convincing other people that its worth a little of their time to learn using it.
Goodbye,
Louis

Gmail has POP access, and any privacy concerns that people may have with Gmail would be negated by the use of some flavor of PGP encryption.
Gmail is still new (still in beta testing) so many account names are still available.
The only other free service that i can think of off the top of my head that has POP access is Yahoo, and you can bet that you'll have a harder time finding the account name you want there.
Now don't get me wrong, i'm not touting Gmail as the be all and end all of email services. I've only been using it for a few days now, and only because somebody dumped an invite on me. But what i can see so far in the way of features, spam filtering, storage etc... it appears to be pretty good.

Hello,
I've had a Gmail account for some time and I've enjoyed it very much. The privacy issues brought up by No More BS are the only downside I've come up with since.
Prior to that I had been using Hotmail for quite some time (circa 1995, before Microsoft even owned the place) and then accessed Hotmail through Outlook Express (which somehow remained free on older accounts).
However, I switched from Outlook Express to Thunderbird some time ago as I started to use an IMAP account, for which OE's features are lacking (mostly the inability to apply filtering rules and spam filters, since SpamAssasin let some through by mistake). Not to be forgotten are the amount of security flaws OE has had in the past.
Those reluctant to switch from Hotmail must remember that it is quite easy to create a Passport account with any valid e-mail account and use it to connect on MSN Messenger.
Goodbye,
Louis

POP mail:
Try Bluebottle
http://www.bluebottle.com
It's fast enough and does the job. Besides, the server is based in Australia, far from those freaks down south invading everybody's privacy.

been using Gmail for awhile now. It's the fastest i've experienced, and has a great interface, for example the easy reply box in received emails and such. Thats the first i've heard about the privacy issues so if that worries you and you must stay away from it, use Yahoo instead of hotmail. I've always thought that hotmail is horrible.

PS - I've got some invites left as well

I fail to see how Gmail is any different from a privacy prospective then any internet service provider. The jist of the arcticle posted on http://www.google-watch.org/gmail.html is that your email is not completely private. Basically, they scan your through your email to display relevant ads while you surf through your email account (much like the google ads on top of the Avcanada pages). The page warns that they can use the same means to scan for certain words or terms, such as "box cutter", "bombing", or something a relating to a less serious problem like "Mp3", and give that information up to people like the FBI or the RIAA.
As long as you're not involved in any illegal activity, you should be ok. If it bothers you though, like Stockfootage says, just encrypt your emails.

Any email you send through hotmail, yahoo, excite...or whatever, is scanned, parsed, logged and transmitted to somebody. How do you think all these "Free" email providers do it? Some "Daddy Warbucks" that's footin the bill for everybody else? Not likely. Emails are all looked at to some extent or another, based on that, advertising content is delivered to you based on that INFO. Until website cookies are deemed to be the spawn of satan and are abolished forever, this will spread throughout the 'net and will be the norm.
