Mechanical Engineering?
Does anyone think it would help to take a 2yr program in mechanical engineering before going to AME school? I'm thinking it might help to have a bit of background knowledge about how hydraulics work, stress acts on moving parts, and basically have a more in depth knowledge of what's actually happening. I don't know if this would help me find a job as an AME later on but it may be a good idea seeing how things are right now.

This would be the best thing you would ever do.. mind you Im somewhat skewed..

Mechanical engineer becoming an ame?
Isn't that like a doctor becoming a nurse?
I'm gonna have fun with this one.
A ceo becoming a secretary?
An electrician becoming a radio shack salesman?
A Pig farmer becoming a pig?
A Prime minister becoming a McDonald's cook?
This will probably be censored to protect the "people", but who cares.
This was fun.

Re: Mechanical Engineering?
A 2yr program isn't going to make anyone an engineer! Unfortunately that word gets tossed around more and more each day. And while we're at it, why are aircraft mechanics called engineers anyway?

That's probably a good plan. This way you will understand some of the theory behind the practical aspects of the work tasks you will be doing as an AME. My AME always seems to appreciate my theoretical explanations on the tasks we have been working on in the maintenance of my former Stinson and now the Thorp T18.(the latest being the theory behind pressure recovery wheel fairings)

Probably for the same reason that the operator of a locomotive is called an engineer. And also the same reason that the operator of a heating plant is called a stationary engineer.AMM wrote:... And while we're at it, why are aircraft mechanics called engineers anyway?
Fling Wing, if you want to be a mechanical engineer, then sign up for a four-year program in a real university. With the economy the way it is today, your best bet would be to get yourself into a co-op program such as they have at Carleton U, Queens U, U of Toronto and others. (The co-op program is where you attend classes for 4 months then get a work term for maybe 12 months, then go back to the classroom for 4 months, until you graduate with an acredited engineering degree. Very good, very valuable, and you learn a *lot*)
If that many years is too long for you and want to spend only two years in a program, then go to a place like Algonquin College and graduate from their two-year mechanical engineering technician program. This will allow you to qualify as a certified technician.
However, if a school is promising to make you a full mechanical engineer in two years, then before you spend your hard-earned money on anything that serious, you really need to look at the program with a healthy skepticism. Do some checking around to confirm independently whether or not the school has an accredited engineering program. Do not simply rely on the brochures from that school for that. Confirm it from independent outside sources.

Hmmm, people in the past have told me that they can't tell when I'm joking... there was no sarcasm intended.AMM wrote:Multiple wrongs don't make a right! I remember hearing someone give a talk about the roots of the word "engineer".
Think back to the days before there were any professional engineering associations and before there were any iron rings.
These were the days when any clever mechanical device was called an "engine" (before steam engines or gasoline engines were invented)
Think of a siege engine employed by an army storming a castle for example.
So the ingenious mechanics who had the abilities to create these and other types of engines were called "engineers". (The word engine is the root of the word ingenious.)
this pre-dates electrical, mechanical, chemical, or aerospace engineers. The professional associations came later.
So aircraft maintenance engineers, locomotive engineers and stationary engineers are the guys who have inherited the legacy of these "ingenious mechanics".
I respect that.
Re: Mechanical Engineering?
Do whatever you wnat fling wing but there are no shortage of wrenching jobs for those with the knack.
The knack, some drive and the desire to do things right.
I worked with an AME who had a mechanical engineering degree. Good guy, loved to talk theorys but he was no better on nuts and bolts than the rest of us.
Education's always a good thing though. Do what you want to do. It's just not going to make a huge difference in getting a job wrenching.
Rebuilding a couple old motorcycles, working on an aircraft rebuild for a museum or something similar would be more impressive on a resume, to me anyhow - if I were in charge of hiring and firing.

That is exactly why instead of calling the Slaves of the 19th Century south, I preferred to call them Cotton Engineers.mdscientist61 wrote: These were the days when any clever mechanical device was called an "engine" (before steam engines or gasoline engines were invented)
