Sick pilot unable to land Qantas jet in Perth

By staff writers

A QANTAS plane landed safely in Perth this morning after calling for assistance when a pilot became incapacitated.

The airline confirmed that flight QF593 from Adelaide had issued a “pan" alert and asked to be met by an ambulance after one of the pilots suffered a health issue, The Australian reports.

The Qantas 737-800 from Adelaide carrying 110 passengers left Adelaide about 6.50am (local time) and touched down in Perth at 7.30am.

An emergency was declared by the co-pilot and air traffic control vectored the aircraft onto the longest runway 21/03, thewest.com.au reports.

After touch down the aircraft came to a halt on the runway and a tug was required to tow it to Perth’s Qantas domestic terminal.

"A 'pan' alert is an international urgency to request assistance," Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) spokesman, Ian Brokenshire, said.

"The co-pilot requested priority because the aircraft was down to a single pilot and he doesn't need a high workload when it comes to the arrival process."

A Qantas spokesman said the plane landed under the control of the first officer in line with standard procedure.

"There was never a safety issue," the spokesman said.

The pilot was taken to hospital.

He will undergo a full medical examination before being allowed to pilot another aircraft.

Mr Brokenshire said It was a standard operating procedure with a successful outcome and the ATSB would not be investigating the incident.

"This type of incident does happen occasionally. They (pilots) do train for it to make sure the process is handled safely," Mr Brokenshire said.

"They landed and all the punters are on the ground happy."

"Any landing where you are rolling in on the wheels is always a good landing."

Rumack: What was it we had for dinner tonight?
Elaine Dickinson: Well, we had a choice of steak or fish.
Rumack: Yes, yes, I remember, I had lasagna.

I'm not getting involved in this one... moon the loon already gave me a hard enough time for my tongue in cheek comments on the last incident like this.

Having never flown an aircraft with a tiller, is it not possible to steer/taxi without it?

You have very limited control without use of the tiller. You could use differential thrust and/or braking to help out too.

On the RJ, I think you get 5 degrees of nosewheel steering without the tiller (rudders only), and 68 degrees with it. Some large jets have tillers on both sides too.

No tiller on the 737 or as we call it here in oz "the maggot"

either way would have needed to be towed at some point in time since our company policy is that only the captain
may park the aircraft.

should have done a bit of this though before finally putting it on the ground!!!
