GPS Waypoint Hold Clearance
Anyone have an example of a GPS waypoint hold clearance. Specifically, how do you phrase direction and course from the waypoint?
Thanks

Re: GPS Waypoint Hold Clearance
I was asked this week to enter a hold on a GPS waypoint for the first time in my experience as an IFR instructor - the controller issued the clearance similar to an NDB hold "SW IB on a track of 015 degrees at waypoint X" It took me a few seconds to figure out how to configure the GPS but it worked out nicely by the time we hit the waypoint.
Re: GPS Waypoint Hold Clearance
I have had to Hold on a GPS fix for a RNAV approach... waiting for another aircraft to fly the approach. I would assume that you should know to navigate to and from a Waypoint on a specific track, shouldn't that be covered in your GPS training.

I just make sure to dial up the waypoint, make sure the sequence is right, select GPS on the NAV/GPS switch, HOLD on the AUTO/HOLD switch, and dial in the HSI for the desired heading. Then I hand fly it because autopilots are for losers and I like to hand fly.

Sounds like you are just bitter that you don't fly an aircraft with an autopilotpaydaymayday wrote:. Then I hand fly it because autopilots are for losers and I like to hand fly.

Re: GPS Waypoint Hold Clearance
I wasn't asking how to fly the hold, program the gps or the fms system. I normally have that all figured out. And yes, we cover that portion in our GPS and FMS ground school.
I was asking how the clearance is given because I haven't received one in a long time, and I was planning on giving some RNAV hold clearances next time I was teaching in the sim, and would like to give them properly. Saves confusion.
Thanks

Re: GPS Waypoint Hold Clearance
Issue it like you would issue an NDB hold. "Cleared direct TURDD, maintain 7000, hold SE inbound track 320, expect further clearance at 1230"
