There's a waiver for that if the wing is attached to the fuselage and not whirling around in some ridiculous fashion.
I couldn't help but notice that the gear remained down for a very long time. In fact I didn't see it come up at all while the 787 was still in sight. Part of a test maybe?
Pretty cool looking machine. I hear helicopter 'SKI' on the freq, and some mention of 'the IMAX helicopter' by a controller at some point... Perhaps an IMAX film being made about the 787, or at least the flight test program?!

The gear may not have come up at all during the flight. The type escapes me but it was a first flight of some time ago and the gear would not extend. Oops.

Usually landing gear is kept down for a first flight.
If you have never seen the 5 part series of the making of the 777, its worth a watch if you can find it. On the 777 they left the gear down on that first flight for the first several mins. After settling in, they began to cycle the gear as part of its tests. That flight was over 3 hrs.
Very sleek looking plane in my opinion. Looks like its built for speed! Hopefully Boeing get through the rest of the test program without any hick-ups!

The 727 looked like it was built for speed. This, and most new airliners nowadays, look like the eraser end of a pencil...the sharp end being on the tail.
Hats off to Boeing, again, for betting the shop; my thought is that this will be the better choice for the future of airlines (fuel economy and electricification of maintenance intensive hydraulics/pneumatics).

Agreed, but one of the things that grab my attention about the 787 is how the windshield blends in with the rest of the nose of the a/c for exampe. Those engines are friggin' huge as well when looking at the a/c from the front. I think it is the best looking a/c since the 757.

Well, it's a neat bit of engineering, but I'll save my "hat's off" until well after the flight testing is complete and this fleet has many thousands of hours behind it. I hope it works out for them, and for the sake of efficiency.
