Peawanuck is the closest "real airport". There is at least one old strip in the park if I remember correctly. I landed at the old base on the other side of the river from Peawanuck (Pine Tree line site I believe) in a Caravan. It was pretty soft, but doable at the the time.

Well I don't think it was Peawanuck you landed at I think it was Winisk thats up the river about 60 miles or so on the J.B coast

Only ever landedin the park on floats, Sutton lake, Sutton River half way down and at the river mouth. Better bring your own gas along as well. Oh yeah, seen a polar bear every time, once up close and personal.

I've landed at both, though I only went into Winisk once (just to look around). Winisk is not on the James Bay coast though, it is on the Hudson Bay coast on the east side on the Winisk River, not too far downstream from Peawanuck (which is on the west side of the river).

I landed in the river just south of the coast too. Interesting spot, not too much room to maneuver!

I got a little mixed up. The radar station at Sioux Lookout was part of the Pinetree Line. Winisk was part of the Mid-Canada Line.

Not sure about Sutton and Hawley (sp?) Lakes but the river does pass through the park on it's way out to the coast I believe.

Winisk looks like it might do, for what I want to get up to. any other useable strips further in the park than say Peawanuk?

Thanks

We used to do some off airport stuff in PBPP with the black and yellow twotters. It's been at least 25 years since I last flew a twotter in the park.
Is Martin Obbard flying without the Yellow Birds now?

Keep in mind, Winisk is a)unmaintained (don't know what you're flying in with) b)may be private property (not sure and didn't think about that when I landed there...oops) and c)is only 30 km downstream from Peawanuck

No Peawanuck (CYPO) is the firthest north airport in the park. Further to the west (but out of the park I believe) is Fort Severn (CYER) and to the east down on the coast of James Bay (and nowhere near the park) is Attawapiskat (CYAT).

I used to work for North Star Air and we had a sister company called Canoe Frontiers. We had a ton of canoes and gear up there for people who ended up at Peawanuck after doing trips down the Winisk from Webequie. They might still have stuff up there. They had affiliations with some people in Peawanuck who did guiding in the Park too. Obviously I don't know what and when you're plans are.

Yep the Chukamolins(?). They'd do anything to get your booze. Real trustworthy guys. You think they tried to sabotage the planes on purpose?

MCL map shows that there are at least 2 other MCL radar sites with airstrips within the park (sites 421 and 415 -- Lat & Long are given) plus site 509 had an airstrip, and is just barely outside the park. Unfortunately, google does not have high res images of these sites (they do for other parts of the park, including winisk).

Just remember theses are long disused airstrips... don't expect to pull up to a full service FBO!, in fact assume the strip is more or less just a path with smaller trees than the rest of the area!
