Post by piston »

Any builders or owners out there?

I am currently building a Viking Dragonfly MkII. It is approx. 55% complete. Would like to hear from any current builders or owners.

I think Gary Wolf has one in Kitchener/Waterloo with an EA 81 Subaru engine in it.

Good to know. I have only found two flying Dragonflies in Canada thus far. One is Sarnia and the other in Edmonton.

Anyway of getting a hold of him?

Thanks

He's the national RAA president, so a call to the RAA office might work.

Will it have wingtip mounted wheels or is that just the Quickie? Cool plane nonetheless.

The original plans call for a MkI configuration which is the main gear located on the ends of the canard.

A mod came out for a hoop gear as the original design was causing structural damage to the canards on heavy landings. This was happening often as the dragonflies landed pretty hot. The hoop gear also allowed the dragonflies to land on grass strips and gave a larger prop clearance.

There is a MkIII configuration which has a mod for tricycle gear.

The Quickie and the Drangonfly are two totally different aircraft.

Fair enough. But in my defense I've never seen either in real life, and they do look rather similar on airliners.net, as the following photographer states: http://www.airliners.net/photo/Viking-D ... ae4b3b63f1
I'm sure that as a builder you have a different perspective though.

Good luck on the project.

Also just a note: There are 306 Dragonflys listed on the US Faa registry. No clue as to how many are actually done and flying, but many have been issued an airworthiness certificate.

I have quite a bit of time in a Dragonfly powered by a turbo Subaru. The flying qualities are not that unusual but the landing procedure is very different. If you would like firsthand information give me a call at 519-648-3030 between 9-2 most days.
