That book is probably one of my favorite things I got from my dad after he passed away. I remember him waking me up in the middle of the night when I was 5 to teach me how to tie a bow line.

I seem to remember it references a "noose" also being called a boy scout knot or something along those lines. I got shit at scouts when I tied one. I'll have to dig my book out to see if I remember that right Ahhhh memories

Wilbur went into space two years ago but I now have a new one, he is learning to be a pilot at a very fast rate and is ready for his security pass now.

He wears Wilburs gold bars with pride.

I've heard that dogs can adjust the level of their hearing by tensing and relaxing their inner ear drum. That's why even though they have very sensitive hearing they aren't constantly bothered by everyday sounds.

What this means is that when your dog goes flying with you he will relax his inner eardrum to a point that the sound is comfortable for him. Doggy ear muffs shouldn't be necessary.

I think you're talking about the 'acoustic reflex', which applies to all mammals. I can't find any reference to anyone who has actually measured the accoustic reflex in dogs. The closest is this article, which seems to be saying that dogs suffer from noise-induced hearing loss in the same way as humans:

So, if you care about your dog's hearing and he/she flies with you a lot, it's probably worth investing in something like Mutt Muffs.

As for the doggie hearing, everyone I have ever asked says YES, do the headset.... I have a friend whose dog has flown for years and he wears them happily. Of course, maybe it's not a true test, as he has an IQ of about 180, too.. (the DOG, not the pilot....)

It's a great book, was on sale from $115 down to $79 so I scooped it up for the old library. I might photocopy some of the pages for the trip, we'll certainly have enough time...

Are you flying a float plane again this year?

If so I will try and drop in and see you if you are near my path home this summer as I will be doing a business trip to St Johns NFLD with the guy who I fly the Husky for. My workbench and the dog will be flying down on the airline and we are going to bring the Husky back at our leisure so I plan on visiting as many people as I can.

Will be paying a visit to Hedley to give him some tips on how to improve his flying skills. In return he is going to brief me on how to interact with TC.

So let me know where you will be so we can visit you.
