Abbotsford Shell - Olympics
Spent the weekend on the ramp and got charged for one night parking $290, Navajo, thank goodness we got fuel - to save the additional nights ramp fee. Ground handling fee was only $150. Can't wait to see the landing fee from the airport. Good thing we don't operate a larger aircraft.Called to check to see if this was correct, reason given - Olympics. "Blessed" with the Olympics.

Carson Air owns the Shell now. They always have been happy to gouge you as much as humanly possible.
Geez did I say that....? Or just think it....?
Re: Abbotsford Shell - Olympics
You could always go to Vancouver. I hear it's 500 for handling and 50 bucks a head at some places, and that's before ramp fees! Ahh yes god bless the olympics!!!

Re: Abbotsford Shell - Olympics
The trick is to shoot the IFR approach and land in YXX, taxi around and possible pick up the VFR plan you pre filed to Pitt Meadows, no ramp fees, reasonable fuel rates and no BS olympic surcharges. should you still want to go to ZBB or YVR then clear at the portal and screening trailer for free and continue on. there are no composite flight plans allowed by navcanada. no air filing either for arrival into area 185 as such requiring a landing and departure on 2 seperate flight plans.
Re: Abbotsford Shell - Olympics
To be fair, the FBO's that are charging that amount have spent tens of thousands of dollars converting areas of their facilities to accomodate CATSA and all the other "initiatives" with which they must comply. The charges are to try and recoup money spent solely because of the olympics with which we have all been blessed.
Are we there yet?

Who would allow CATSA to set up on their property at the FBO's expense... oh yea, more fuel sales. CATSA is gov't, it is their requirement - they (us, through tax dollars) should foot the bill. Or even better yet get the trailer off private enterprise property.

KBanner, as of yesterday you are correct, upon further discussion with the ISU and navcanada, the rules are still a work in progress and are being adapted and interpreted as they "learn" the ropes. They apparently will be allowing the composite flight plans into CYA 185 based on which operator is applying.
With respect to the charges for screening, I haven’t seen YVR yet however most other facilities including YYC, YPK, and such all have a glorified Winnebago parked on the apron, which is almost completely self contained requiring minimum power supply and that’s about it. Also the FBOs and airports are getting reimbursed very well for the space used and other costs incurred.
As I said the olympic security measures and airspace are still a work in progress and as of this writing this may all have changed, but I do give credit to the staff behind the counter and phones at Navcanada, the ISU, the FBO's and dispatch offices as they are usually the ones who endure the rath and fury of many security and problems of the foreign / unfamilliar flight crews and such in these times.

The YCW area is dangerous, with all the little guys being pushed up the valley traffic is worse than you'll find during a weekend in a Costco parking lot.
