For the Westjet people...

Post by fa_girl »

... Hello aviation community!

Just a quick question, any input would be appreciated:

For flight attendant at the Calgary base (or anyone else who can help): I live in the Maritimes... Does anyone know if it is possible, with the Westjet FA schedule, to commute when working at the Calgary base? In other words, would it be possible to continue living in the Maritimes (ie keep my house) and just commute to work to Calgary when required? If so, how hard would it be, or what kind of schedule can I expect? What about part time FA's? Do they get travel benefits for the commute? Does anyone else do this? Live in another city and commute to Calgary? If so is there any advice? What about family life? My husband is still in the Maritimes, and as you may understand we have some concerns on the effects it will have on our family life...

Any and all comments/input is welcome.

Thank you in advance!

50% of our Flight Attendants commute, I'm told... and about 40% of the pilots. Yes, it's definitely doable, but make sure you get the real story on how it all works.

FA's have reserve that would require you to be in Calgary most of the time. I would think more often than not you'd be called out during reserve. I think sometimes they allow you to hold your last day of reserve in your home town. I've seen some pretty stressed out FA commuters around Christmas time. I would also consider fatigue issues in your decision. It’s a big factor when it comes to dealing with guests, your crew, medical emergencies, and (knock on wood) other emergencies. It’s also a lot easier to get sick when you're runned down.

Just a thought. WJ is a fantastic company, plenty of people commute, and you got to do what you got to do when it comes to family. I know there's a commuter study going on and hopefully some good things come from that.

The best course of action you can take here is just check the westjet schedule. If you work for westjet you get to fly with them for around 10 bucks. So any flights they have available you will be able to book yourself for on standby, and as an employee you get the highest standby priority available. I used to fly on buddy passes a lot, probably 15 or so times last year and only once was I denied boarding because the flight was full, and I got bumped for an employee.. so it's pretty reliable.

So yeah, I'd advise you just check the WJ schedule for their frequency of flights from your town into CYYC. It's probably 10 hours or so to get to work, but if you can hammar off all your shifts at once you might get 2 or 3 weeks at home per month.

edit.. i hadnt read the above post yet, didnt know you need to be available on call? unfortunate.

You can do your reserve out east if you ask crewsked, and they feel there may be a need (IROPS). It is happening more often, but still count on a good portion out West. That or you can drop your reserve pairing if someone picks it up.
There is also a program we have called Flica. It's a web based program that allows you to modify your schedule from a single leg, to your entire schedule. You can pick up and drop flying as you want as long as someone picks up your flying you’re trying to drop. It’s great for trying to minimize your commuting, or if you have days off and want some extra flying.
We have a lot of former Canjet employees that still live back east, just be ready for the commute.

Thank you so much everyone for taking the time to reply. Wow, this really is a great family! :)

So if I understand correctly, if I am a part timer, then I will have to be on call? Will that make commuting more difficult?

I live in Edmonton and am looking at getting a job with West Jet! (Calgary or Edmonton doesn't matter for the FA position) Either as a Flight Attendant or Customer Service Agent! Any advice? I don't have much customer service experience however I have some experience out side of work (PM me for more info) I applied a couple of weeks ago & am wondering if I will even get the chance for the phone interview? My current job is getting more and more uncomfortable so I am egger to get started in a new career, I want to LOVE my job again! Any Thoughts?
