If a PT6 is spewing smoke and flames it can be a few things. A hung start with no clearing will produce very wet second start with a spectacular smoke and light show. The fuel nozzles may be in dire need of maintenance and flow checking (Dirty fuel?). The purge system needs attention. Poorly maintained fuel nozzles will eat up your hot section in very short order.
High ITT temps on the start sounds like poor battery and/or starter performance. Although as high sustained climb and cruse ITT’s will do more damage to the engine than short start ITT’s. As some else pointed out ditch the NiCad and put in lead acid. The cost per hour on your batteries will decrease due to less maintenance. They are a much safer battery and will give much better starts.
It doesn’t sound like any one problem, more likely many issues from maintenance to operating procedures.
Lastly high hot section cost could be from a cheapy previous H/S inspection.
