Liberalism, atheism, male sexual exclusivity linked to IQ

Post by reality check »

You guessed it, the Right Wingnuts are just plain stupid. Who knew?

http://edition.cnn.com/2010/HEALTH/02/2 ... index.html

(CNN) -- Political, religious and sexual behaviors may be reflections of intelligence, a new study finds.

Evolutionary psychologist Satoshi Kanazawa at the the London School of Economics and Political Science correlated data on these behaviors with IQ from a large national U.S. sample and found that, on average, people who identified as liberal and atheist had higher IQs. This applied also to sexual exclusivity in men, but not in women. The findings will be published in the March 2010 issue of Social Psychology Quarterly.

The IQ differences, while statistically significant, are not stunning -- on the order of 6 to 11 points -- and the data should not be used to stereotype or make assumptions about people, experts say. But they show how certain patterns of identifying with particular ideologies develop, and how some people's behaviors come to be.

The reasoning is that sexual exclusivity in men, liberalism and atheism all go against what would be expected given humans' evolutionary past. In other words, none of these traits would have benefited our early human ancestors, but higher intelligence may be associated with them.

"The adoption of some evolutionarily novel ideas makes some sense in terms of moving the species forward," said George Washington University leadership professor James Bailey, who was not involved in the study. "It also makes perfect sense that more intelligent people -- people with, sort of, more intellectual firepower -- are likely to be the ones to do that."

Bailey also said that these preferences may stem from a desire to show superiority or elitism, which also has to do with IQ. In fact, aligning oneself with "unconventional" philosophies such as liberalism or atheism may be "ways to communicate to everyone that you're pretty smart," he said.

The study looked at a large sample from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (Add Health), which began with adolescents in grades 7-12 in the United States during the 1994-95 school year. The participants were interviewed as 18- to 28-year-olds from 2001 to 2002. The study also looked at the General Social Survey, another cross-national data collection source.

Kanazawa did not find that higher or lower intelligence predicted sexual exclusivity in women. This makes sense, because having one partner has always been advantageous to women, even thousands of years ago, meaning exclusivity is not a "new" preference.

For men, on the other hand, sexual exclusivity goes against the grain evolutionarily. With a goal of spreading genes, early men had multiple mates. Since women had to spend nine months being pregnant, and additional years caring for very young children, it made sense for them to want a steady mate to provide them resources.

Religion, the current theory goes, did not help people survive or reproduce necessarily, but goes along the lines of helping people to be paranoid
, Kanazawa said. Assuming that, for example, a noise in the distance is a signal of a threat helped early humans to prepare in case of danger.

"It helps life to be paranoid, and because humans are paranoid, they become more religious, and they see the hands of God everywhere," Kanazawa said.

Participants who said they were atheists had an average IQ of 103 in adolescence, while adults who said they were religious averaged 97, the study found. Atheism "allows someone to move forward and speculate on life without any concern for the dogmatic structure of a religion," Bailey said.

"Historically, anything that's new and different can be seen as a threat in terms of the religious beliefs; almost all religious systems are about permanence," he noted.

The study takes the American view of liberal vs. conservative. It defines "liberal" in terms of concern for genetically nonrelated people and support for private resources that help those people. It does not look at other factors that play into American political beliefs, such as abortion, gun control and gay rights.

"Liberals are more likely to be concerned about total strangers; conservatives are likely to be concerned with people they associate with," he said.

Given that human ancestors had a keen interest in the survival of their offspring and nearest kin, the conservative approach -- looking out for the people around you first -- fits with the evolutionary picture more than liberalism, Kanazawa said. "It's unnatural for humans to be concerned about total strangers." he said.

The study found that young adults who said they were "very conservative" had an average adolescent IQ of 95, whereas those who said they were "very liberal" averaged 106.

It also makes sense that "conservatism" as a worldview of keeping things stable would be a safer approach than venturing toward the unfamiliar, Bailey said.

Neither Bailey nor Kanazawa identify themselves as liberal; Bailey is conservative and Kanazawa is "a strong libertarian."

Vegetarianism, while not strongly associated with IQ in this study, has been shown to be related to intelligence in previous research, Kanazawa said. This also fits into Bailey's idea that unconventional preferences appeal to people with higher intelligence, and can also be a means of showing superiority.

None of this means that the human species is evolving toward a future where these traits are the default, Kanazawa said.

"More intelligent people don't have more children, so moving away from the trajectory is not going to happen,"
he said.

I am very conservative, and religious. I have been assessed with an IQ of 140. The study could be flawed. There could be a possible manipulation of data to promote a specific agenda. Kind of like climategate.

First of all, I think IQ tests mean jack shit. I'm studying that stuff now in my Psychometrics course.

And secondly, the difference in IQ of 6 points on a test is "statistically significant", but in reality it's the difference between someone having to take a shit and not answering the last 2 questions on the test or not.

This article is absolute hogwash from my semi-educated, quasi-intellectual viewpoint.

But then again, I'm a communist atheist who drives a 1981 Cadillac and spends too much time playing World of Warcraft.

The study basically says that the peak of a bell curve measuring IQ will be slightly higher for atheists and liberals than it will be for the general population. It certainly doesn't say that there are no stupid liberals or atheists, or no smart conservatives or deists, and the conclusion wouldn't require any data manipulation if examples of these cases were found. The exceptions are expected.

You're using unsubstantiated anecdotal evidence of higher intelligence among deists to contradict a study finding that the average intelligence among atheists is higher. The flaw with this argument should be obvious to someone with an IQ of 140.

All that said, istp's point is likely correct: even assuming the study has no blatant flaw in how the data is collected, 6 points is so small that while statistically significant and measurable, it's still likely that the error bars in the data are damn close to 6 points. Anyone going around touting how smart they or their associates are based on this study, or denigrating others based on it, is likely at the left side of the peak of the IQ curve. It would also assume that a 6 point difference would be significant in "useful" intelligence, rather than IQ test taking skill.

[quote="Dash-Ate"]The first thing an invading army does it take over the media. Who owns our media... :?:

I used to control the media Dash ... at least part of it ... but I sold out my holdings to another part of the vast right-wing conspiracy secret society that controls all media in the western world. They made me an offer I couldn't refuse, and once we had made the deal, and sealed it with the secret handshake known only to CRTC licence holders, we found a lawyer and had the deal formalized. Of course, we seached out a lawyer who was also a Crown Prosecutor with a spotless record of sending minority males to prison for minor offences to serve long sentences to prevent them from speaking "The real truth" to street people. You'd know all about that though Dash, so why amd I going on about that here?

Those right-wing illuminati types are epitomized by the founders of CNN ... the "Clinton News Network." It was started by Ted Turner, husband of that rabid right winger, Jane Fonda ... so right wing, she used any means possible to isneak into North Viet Nam for the purposes of demoralizing the enemy, including taking turns at "manning" a position on an Anti-Aircraft Gun, and posing for pictures to be used in the media.

Yup, those right-wingers are in control of all the media from street hand-outs, to the local underground newspaper, to formal newspapers, radio stations, and the greatest prize of all ... a TV network like like MSNBC, as a part of the repression of "The Little Man" right Dash Ate?

Nice to see the fish are still biting

IQ does mean precious little, I mean how can anyone with more than a few brain cells bumping around in the space between their ears actually believe there's a god? I mean seriously, it takes about 3 seconds of critical thought to figure that one. Minus all the nasty childhood indoctrination of course, and maybe the history of the whole enterprise. Whatever. God Fearing, ha! :prayer: Sheep, nothing but herding sheep.

At any rate, Conservatives would rather spend money on guns than education or healthcare, takes a certain dimwittedness (my new term) to come up with that one. Too bad Mr. Change Has COME to America is trying to do both, bye bye Empire. Maybe PEOPLE are just stupid? I think that's a much better hypothesis!

A simple, objective method for measuring intelligence is acquired wealth.

http://infoproc.blogspot.com/2009/11/if ... -rich.html
If you're so smart, why aren't you rich?

Does being smart help you become rich?

Folksy Warren Buffett once said that an investor with IQ of 150 should sell 30 points to someone else, as anything above 120 is unnecessary.

Consider the following simple model (we can call it the "Igon Model" in honor of Malcolm Gladwell):

Igon Model: IQ correlates positively with wealth, but the effect goes away for IQ > 120. IQ above 120 provides no advantage, relative to IQ=120, for acquiring wealth.

Were this model to be true, one would expect with overwhelming probability to find that the vast majority of rich people have IQ around 120, but not much higher. This is because IQ is normally distributed: as you go further out the tail the population decreases exponentially. To be specific, IQ = 120 corresponds to the 90th percentile, whereas IQ = 135 is 99th percentile (i.e., only 1 in 10 people with IQ > 120 have IQ > 135) and IQ = 145 is 99.9th percentile (i.e., only 1 in 100 people with IQ > 120 have IQ > 145).

Now let's look at the 2009 Forbes list of richest people in the world:

1 William Gates III 53 40.0 United States
2 Warren Buffett 78 37.0 United States
3 Carlos Slim Helu 69 35.0 Mexico

If the Igon Model were correct, we would not expect to find this list dominated by people with IQ much higher than 120. But in fact we do. Note these three made their money in different ways: Gates founded a software company, Buffett is primarily an investor, and Carlos Slim is an oligarch ;-)

Bill Gates scored 1580 on the pre-1995 SAT. His IQ is clearly >> 145 and possibly as high as 160 or so.

Warren Buffett graduated high school at 16 ranked in the top 5 percent of his class despite devoting substantial effort to entrepreneurial activities. Most people who know him well refer to him as brilliant, that folksy quote above notwithstanding. I would suggest the evidence is strong that his IQ is above 135, perhaps higher than 145.

Carlos Slim studied engineering and taught linear programming while still an undergraduate at UNAM, the top university in Mexico. He reportedly discovered the use of compound interest at age 10. I would suggest his IQ is also at least 135.

So it would appear that the three richest men in the world all have IQs that are higher than 90 percent or even 99 percent of the > 120 IQ population. (Relative to the general population they are all likely in the 99th or even 99.9th percentile.) The probability of this happening in the Igon Model is less than 1 in 1000.

[Here's a basketball analogy: the analogous Igon Model for basketball would say height over 6ft2 (90th percentile) doesn't increase your likelihood of success in basketball. Suppose we find the 3 top players in the world are 7ft (Shaq/Gates), 6ft8 (LeBron/Buffett) and 6ft6 (Kobe/Slim). That strongly disfavors the model, as a random draw of 3 people from the set of people over 6ft2 in height has almost zero probability of producing the 3 heights we found.]

Note to angry Gladwell egalitarians: don't take this analysis too seriously :-) It's really an example of "Igon analysis" in the spirit of MG!

There are many factors aside from intelligence that impact success in business or investing. See here for a discussion by money manager and investment theorist William Bernstein, which is very similar to what Buffett has said on various occasions. If you carefully study biographies of the three men listed above, what really stands out (aside from high mental ability) is their determination, drive and fascination with material success beginning at a young age. See also: success vs ability and creators and rulers.

What about the broader population? It's well established that graduates of elite universities earn more than graduates of less selective schools. But, interestingly, controlling for SAT score (IQ) eliminates the differential. I wonder why? (See also here for UT Austin data on earnings variation with SAT and major.)

Well, that's a pretty correlational idea. And we know what all of that correlation/causation junk is.

After being bombarded with a lot of psychological claptrap in my last year of my B.A., I've decided that everything is sort of right and sort of wrong.

If you're a balls-out genius in India or China born to peasant society, your argument doesn't really hold much water. Also, the sample size of your quoted study is pretty small, compared to the billions of people on the planet.

Maybe you're just stirring the pot here, Heddster, I don't know. But I'll consider it stirred. What the heck? It's not like we're all geniuses here striving for human betterment. In fact, I'll bet there's a correlation between being stupid and wanting to fly! It's not the safest thing to do, you know. But it sure is fun!

Never!

If one assumes that someone with a high IQ is "smart"
and someone with a low IQ is "dumb" (not sure I fully
agree with that, but let's run with it) ...

It stands to reason that a smart person wouldn't have
to work very hard to earn the same amount of money
as a dumb person.

If you agree with the above, then ...

If that smart person was motivated to do so, if he worked
very very hard indeed, he could accumulate considerable
wealth. If that's how he chose to spend his time. Hint:
read Warren Buffet's biography, "Snowball" to learn a
little bit more about him.

The IQ's of the three richest men on Forbes' list
tend to confirm this theory.

For a counter-point to disprove this theory ... could
you find me a single person with a measured IQ well
to the left hand side of the bell curve - say 70 - that
has personally accumulated (and kept) a billion dollars
in his lifetime?
