Sailing Trip... Here at last.
Well,
After a pile of PM's this past while, I thought I'd just post a quick and dirty thread. We're about ready to go, the boat is 95% organized/stocked/rigged, and the weather is looking good offshore on the weekend (can't leave port on a Friday you know...)
The boat is an Alajuela 38, a very solid cutter rigged offshore design and with pretty lines. It's the property of a very good friend of mine, and it'll be home to me for the next two months (if I can make myself get off), him the next three years. This leg from Victoria to the Marquesas Islands in French Polynesia is about 3700nm on a great circle route, but I guess we'll end up sailing closer to 4000nm by the time it's over. It's the second longest ocean going leg on the planet, and the route bisects Hawaii and North/Central America, but with the Trades blowing strong in March, we're cautiously optimistic of a reasonably quick passage, hoping for closer to 32 days than 42, but you never do know.
The first three days will be spent beating offshore about 250nm to get sea room, then it'll be a sharp left to almost a due south heading... for a long time! By about mid-California latitudes, the water temps will be in the low-70's, and it'll just get warmer from there. I've promised my sister-in-law that I'd swim across the equator... not the smartest thing I've ever done considering I hate swimming in water I can't see the bottom of.
Anyway, I'll have limited email, text only, no internet surfing, but will try to post some pix either when I get to Nuku Hiva, or alternatively, back home again. Lilfsster knows how to get in touch if anyone wants to.
A few of you have already sent well-wishes, thank you for that. With any luck it'll be an uneventful trip, but we are very early in the season so the train of Low's crossing the Pacific is still marching, both a good and bad thing.
Have a good couple months,
stl

Enjoy!!!

The hardest thing about flying is knowing when to say no
After over a half a century of flying no one ever died because of my decision not to fly.

Don't drink the salt water. It makes you mad. MAD I TELL YOU.......MAD!!!
Bon Voyage!
She reminds me of a Southern Cross 29 I used to sail. Canoe stern, but much prettier! Lovely lines.

Well stl, I don't really know you but this trip sounds awesome and I'm gonna wish you all the best. 4000nm of open ocean sounds badass.
Any chance you can post a gps record of you track?

Re: Sailing Trip... Here at last.
Thanks guys,
It's going to be a great experience one way or the other.
She's a great boat, lots of room, handles the seas really well, and is super balanced under almost any sail reduction. Cutters are good for that. We've got a full compliment of sails from big light air chutes to a storm tri-sail, and a couple of spares.
I'll try to get a few more shots of her as we bring it around on Thursday, there's been pretty poor light to shoot anything other than snaps.

I only worked on Allison 501s, and in spite of being old and large they were pretty quiet. Suck back 1200PPH each engine though...

Re: Sailing Trip... Here at last.
Thanks again,
We brought the boat around to Victoria harbour today, had a good shakedown of the new self-steering gear among things. Was fabricated by a good friend and it seems to work right out the box... famous last words! The new rigging performed well, and other than a couple minor things to clean up in the morning/enroute, we're good to go. Had a nice send-off tonight, with a huge steak, and am now looking forward to a good night's rest.
It's pretty much packed now except personal gear, which will go aboard in the morning, then the plan is still to pull into Sooke for a few hours until it's officially Saturday, then get on the road...
There's a good site for Pacific weather if you want to see what's out there, this is the weather fax we'll be getting twice a day: http://www.opc.ncep.noaa.gov/shtml/P_brief.shtml
I hope everyone has a good and safe spring, looking forward to telling you all about it when I get back.
Fly safe,
