NEW COMPOSITE APPRENTICE / GRADUATE

Post by Canrotor »

Hello All,

I am a current college student in an AME (structures) program and i am wondering if anyone has any information/advice about where to start looking for work in only the composites field in either manufacturing or repair...??? Looking to graduate in late April.Would having the C.C.T
(certified composites technician) training as well as the college composite training help to get the first job...???

Any thoughts would be helpful.......

Composites is such a specialized subject your going to have a tough time finding work especially the way the industry is these days. I would look at shops that do custom interior work and manufacturing outfits. Maybe look at Avcorp out here in BC or Heli one. Not sure if either one of them is looking. Bombardier? Bell? Military? Good luck.

Avcorp has alot of people on layoff...not too likely they will be hiring off the street anytime soon.

Cascade laying off, Air Canada/Aveos laying off... blah blah blah.

I find it amazing that any young person would want to bother with this industry but I guess when you're in the aerospace programs, they don't tell you what's going on in the industry. They just want your money.

Everyone I know just wants to get out and you're trying to get in.

My advice to you is to get yourself a trade that has nothing to do with aviation.

Good luck to you.

You're about 4-5 years early, demand will pick-up for composites and metal work as new aircraft age and the present older workforce retires. Industrial type aircraft are not being maintained now and are subjected to ground handling damage from employees who are not concerned or unaware of the consequences of their actions, and as such it won't be long before they will require lots of repairs especially repairs due to erosion or water ingression. Question is how do you position yourself to take advantage of that environment and gain the skill inside the trade? If I could do it over I might think of the possibility of starting my own small repair shop and trying to build it up with whatever contract work I could find or create. Is there a better way? Yes its been thrashed to death, as mentioned the aviation school system is just that, a business that requires capital at any cost.

So far the instructors have been great and we are being told there is lots of work available when the program is over.
the above is canrotors words as of oct 2009. He was well aware of what this business is like, as a quick search of his posts will reveal.

I don't have any leads for you either, so I'd suggest you bother your great instructors for the company names for the "lots of work available".

My advice for a young guy working with composites; go south, and try and get into the NASCAR industry. I know of a guy who did this, and he is very happy. Makes lots of money, well respected.... all the things we don't get in this industry.

Seriously, best of luck, and I hope the rest of the newbie crowd understands that we are not full of shit, when say what we do about this business.

Im sure you're not the only one to inhale the hook the instructors were offering, but Im hoping others will be wiser to it.

If you did'nt pay for it, then you are already miles ahead of those who have.

Congrats.
