It struck me during that interview that the Sea King could fire warning shots from its GPMG ... wow.
That'll teach 'em.

Thankfully Fogducker, "that level of firepower hasn't been needed".
What a tame life that must be, a door gunner on a SeaKing for the CF.
Second favorite line was: "We can get to a contact in a lot less time then it takes for the ship to get there." -You don't say?!

No such person - the AESOP or TACCO (ACSO) share the duties...Mr. North wrote:What a tame life that must be, a door gunner on a SeaKing for the CF.
The GPMG is no slouch of a weapon. Having put thousands of rounds down-range with the FN C-6, she can fire high velocity 7.62mm rounds out to a good range. Even the baby brother Minimi C-9 has an even higher rate of fire with similar engagement ranges. Somali pirate vessels really wouldn't have much in the way of protection against such weapons system.

Pretty sure the clip wasn't made to educate you or me-the general public might enjoy knowing about something the military is doing.Mr. North wrote:Thankfully Fogducker, "that level of firepower hasn't been needed".

I seem to recall seeing news photos with Somali pirates slinging RPG-7s in their boats. I wouldn't feel comfortable bringing my Sea Pig within range of one of those!SAR_YQQ wrote:No such person - the AESOP or TACCO (ACSO) share the duties...Mr. North wrote:What a tame life that must be, a door gunner on a SeaKing for the CF.

When we used to take the FEs out to do their annual door gun quals on the Twin Huey in Gagetown, we'd use a 4x8' sheet of plywood for a target.
After flying multiple runs straight and level past it (IIRC, at 80 kts, but can't remember the alt, maybe 200') there would be very few holes in the wood at the end of the exercise.
With all the movements and vibrations from a chopper, a pintle-mounted door gun is not that accurate. It's meant to be a defensive weapon.

Well, I've got to admit that spending an afternoon firing a few full boxes of 7.62 into the butts is one hell of a fun day. Never fired the GPMG but lots of rounds through the old Browning, the FN C-2, and going waaaayyy back the 303 Bren gun.
I was describing to someone the other day how you could be in the butts with the pointer indicating hits, and momentarily see the rounds flying a few feet over your head silhouetted against the right kind sky background. Sure wouldn't have been enough time to duck after you'd seen one ... LOL.
