Tailwind Takeoff.....your 2 cents

Post by Kosiw »

In what position do you hold the ailerons, if you had to takeoff in a quartering tailwind? (only for arguements sake, and not interested in performance issues...), interested in all aircraft types.

Thanks

If its a quartering tailwind..deflect your ailerons into wind. Quartering left, slight aileron left..opposite for right quartering. Has worked from Cessna, to Beaver, to King Airs and Hos for me. I MUST add an addendum that I very rarely take off with a tailwind. All other components need to be right for me to opt for a tailwind takeoff. Sometimes on the coast there is no other choice. Just beware, they are dangerous under the wrong circumstances.

Think about it... if your taking off with a tailwind, its probably no more than 10-15 kts.....so as soon as your ASI reads 20, well there's no tailwind on your controls......

Think about it even harder, DHC. How does your ASI read your speed? And what speed does it measure? Would it really need to show 20 in order to prove you have no tailwind?

No but the airplane can't tell the difference between being parked and having a 20knot headwind, reading 20 on the asi, or whether its moving forward with a tailwind and reading 20kts. It's still 20 kts on the head.

Yes, and you wouldn't have to wait for your ASI to do anything but begin to move.

DHC3Rwannafly does need to think about the ASI a little harder, but he (almost) made the point that I was going to make: whatever taxi/start-of-take-off-run control inputs you start with need to be relaxed as you speed up.

I think that logic also works best in a A380 in the performance chapters under ASDA TODA sections of that aircrafts' AFM.

There are a lot of young eyes reading this forum...I'd hate to see your advice be taken seriously. 'jus sayin' :)

With a propeller on the front of the fuselage, you don't even
have to wait for the ASI to move, with respect to the elevator
(and rudder) - the prop slipstream takes care of that!

If I apply brakes and some power, I don't even need any
forward stick to raise the tail, when I am still stopped -
all I need is neutral stick - just let go of it! Clearly any
tailwind component is irrelevant to the elevator.

I have done airshows in Central America where we have
done head-on takeoffs and landings, and I had a 20 knot
tailwind for both. No biggie.
