Re: CONAIR L-188
HMMM, the grape vine has the "said L-188" having a wing damaged during a C check overseas... and the plot thicken. Sure hope there's more than one option for an import. But from what I saw in summer 2009 CYKA looks real good with yellow and silver nose to tail in the pits.

Any ideas where the other L-188s will be. I had heard that Williams Lake was to be closed for repairs for portions of the summer.

A TANKER BASE NEAR YOU.
Speculation has some base changes for the 2010 season.
CYWL and CYCG for pit/ramp upgrade
So Cywl could go mobile unit to Quesnal,Campbell River, or Puntzi, or just start in the north at CYXJ. CYCG could start in Cranbrook till construction complete, so Fall 2010.
Appears to be an interesting spring in BC and Alberta. Wait and see, SNAFU.

This is off topic, but anyone know if Conair hired this year?

Re: CONAIR L-188
The rumour was actually potential layoffs. I don't know for sure if that happened.

Re: CONAIR L-188
Ramp work at those two bases is due to commence in April with an expected duration of 6-8 weeks. Contracts at those bases begin May 1 for YWL; May 31 for YCG. No confirmation yet if or to where the two L-188s based at those airports will be moved.onezerotenthousand wrote:A TANKER BASE NEAR YOU.

I would bet against YPU, YBL hosting either airplane in the spring.
As mentioned, Conair's new L-188 will be in YXX. Air Spray's will begin their contracts in YWL, YCG and YYF.

Ya Gotta love the Yukons Cats, thanks Brian for the tour way back..

There is nothing wrong with the gear on a Tracker - they just forgot to put brakes on them. Conair cleverly got the industry to accept LRC, too. The Firecats go pretty well if you push up the throttles.

Re: CONAIR L-188
If you need stronger, more reliable gear than is made by Grumman, you'd best do a little self-examination of your landing technique!
When you've got a tailhook, who the hell cares about brakes? As long as they will hold against full power before the cat shot, and grab enough to turn under the direction of a crewman on deck, the ring-wearning engineers have done their job.
By the way, excuse my ignorance, but what's the LRC that Conair has championed? Long Range Cruise?
All these questions and opinions before the season even begins isn't a good sign .... Like the Farmer's Almanac, I predict there will be a lot of arguing at bases across the country during Red Alerts.
Great topics like ... Will those cheap management jerks ever re-instate the ice cream budget? They have no clue how badly taking that perk away ten years ago hurt morale. Next, they'll be getting touchy about pilots sleeping in the waiting room when the boss comes in for his monthly visit.....after all, that pilot deserves a sleep. He flew 2 weeks ago!
Or other such pressing topics that seem to mean the world to a bomber pilot struggling to make ends meet through the summer. The ones who think absolutely nothing of massively pissing off absolutely everyone they come in contact with for 3 weeks straight if it means an extra $3 a day to them ... on top of somewhere around 450 to $600 per day.

You forgot the favorite subject. Talking about pilots that have to work year around to make less than what we do in four months...like you.

Re: CONAIR L-188
Is there anything more boring than sitting at an air tanker base week after week doing nothing?
The most difficult thing about flying is knowing when to say no.
After over a half a century of flying I can not remember even one trip that I refused to do that resulted in someone getting killed because of my decision not to fly.

Snowshoe - that was the word I had received, but it hadn't come down to the crunch yet. Good to hear it's worked out for those there, fougner.

Re: CONAIR L-188
., the boring moments are more than balanced by the busy ones. It's a feast or famine business and not for everybody. Most of us don't just 'sit around' anyway - we have plenty of things to keep us occupied and make no apologies for enjoying ourselves.
As for hiring, they ended up bringing on new pilots this spring, to cover for some unexpected last-minute injuries and medicals.
The new L-188 will arrive on contract in YXX a few days late due to paperwork holdups by your favourite regulatory agency.
