Moving to YYC
Just wondering if there is any decent places to rent near the airport.
-Bars/Clubs within stumbling distance
-Places to eat
-Places to have fun
-Not too much crime would be nice since the little one will be coming with
-Basically I would like to know how life in YYC is if you live around the airport.

If only I got to sleep with as many Flight Attendants as my girlfriend thinks I do...

I can vouch for NFA's neighbourhood - I live about three blocks over from him.
Not the cheapest neighbourhood, but a good place to raise a child.
If you're willing to live in the burbs, you should be able to find plenty of places closer to the airport. The city is growing at a ridiculous rate, and is starting the process of wrapping around the airport.
Real estate prices are fairly high right now, partially because of the superheated Alberta economy (courtesty of high oil prices)

Please don't tell my mother that I work in the Oilpatch...she still thinks that I'm the piano player at a whorehouse.
I am living in a 3 bedroom place in whitehorn which rents for 750/month and is probably the absolute closest to the airport(less then 5min). It is a nice, clean home and yard with new appliances and fresh reno's. Whitehorn is a nice neighbour hood in my opinion, although a lot of people have a prejudice of it because of its high ethnic population. Crime rates are probably comparable to inner city neighbourhoods like kensington or even the new suburbs. The house is located on a nice block down from a catholic elementary school. It would be perfect for any one in the aviation industry including students attending SAIT's Art Smith Aero center. I am going to have to break my lease because of a job I am taking in Sk, And I would like to find an acceptable new tenant. My landlord is picky about tenants, which keeps the place in excellant condition. PM me for more details
I saw the best minds of my generation destroyed by madness.
Sorry to say this, Calgary Kid, but I'd disagree with you on the crime rates. I lived in Pineridge for two years, and it's nowhere near as nice a neighbourhood as Kensington, Hillhurst, or Sunnyside. Not to say that it's a truly bad neighbourhood, but it's not ideal in that respect either.
That said, there are GREAT ethnic restaurants up in the northeast. Vietnamese, Indian, Japanese...you name it.

Welcome to cowtown!!!!
Where ya coming in from? I moved many times slowly making my across the country from Halifax.
Anyway, I give me vote to what is considered inner city NW, and some parts of the NE.
Kenningston was mentioned, and it’s my favorite part of town. It is by far the coolest part of town with many trendy shops, pubs, and a bit a small town atmosphere – except for rush hour traffic.
In that local area is Hillhurst (NW), Sunnyside (NW), Crescent heights (NE), and Bridgeland (NE). I must warn you that further NE you go the grungier it gets and crime does up. I presently live in Bridgeland and it’s ok, but personally I would not raise a little one here, lots of bums. Crescent heights are a sweet place to live as well, as is the previously mentioned. My drive to work is maybe 10 mins in average traffic. The further west you go (Kenningston) will add maybe 7 mins.
The walk is 30 mins stumbling, and cab ride is maybe $8.00 to a variety of bars from where I live and might be $10.00 from Kenningston.
Rent is anywhere from $650-$800 for a nice 2 bedroom, and since the vacancy rate is around 2.6% you can wheel and deal with any price they offer.
If your looking to buy in any of those areas, I hope your wife is wealthy. In Kenningston for example you would find it hard to get into an infill for fewer than 750 large, let alone a good size house. There are other nice areas in the city, but for convenience to work and inner city fun, the areas I mentioned are the best.
If you have any questions, feel free to ask.
Cheers.
PS, NFA we should grab a beer some night. Im stumbling distance from there.

Thanks to all for your replies....seeing as I have never been to Calgary before in my life, the info is coming in really handy. And Dockjock is right...Real estate price are only high in Calgary to those that have never lived outside Calgary. Living in Vancouver right now...800 per month for a 2 bedroom
If only I got to sleep with as many Flight Attendants as my girlfriend thinks I do...
Crime rate in YYC by community
I would suggest that you check out the following Calgary Police Service Site. It gives you crime stats by community and may help you decide.

In Calgary, we have a pretty large and strict police force, and in comparison to many Canadian cities (and US for that matter) one of the "cleanest" downtown areas. It's definitely a conservative city. Not sure from where you are moving from but beware of the police's photo-radar. It's a huge cash cow for Calgary and they exploit it wherever and whenever they can. Ask around and you'll learn of their hot-spots. Not that this should indicate I speed at all!
oh ya, almost forgot!
I see no one has mentioned about the absolutely ridiculous vehicle insurance rates for Alberta! Be prepared to be shocked. Again I can't speak for ALL provinces but compared to BC, SK and MB, our car insurance is high.

reading further into this thread, I see you are coming from YVR. I had a nice 2 bedroom condo in Calgary 2 years ago for $700/month so a bit cheaper than what you mention. It was in the SW (Coach Hill) which is the hilly side of Calgary, great views of the Rockies from there.

What is your definition of high when you say high insurance? Anybody wanna tell us how much they pay and what kind of car it is for. Please mention weather or not you have a good driving record.
If only I got to sleep with as many Flight Attendants as my girlfriend thinks I do...
I drive a new Jetta, and I pay $900.00 for the year, with full coverage (except glass)
Cheers.
PS, im 28

Try country hills i've got some friends around there. 10 minute drive from the airport at any time of day, good local pub (s), nice area (new). Not sure about the rent though but there's alot of WestJetters in the area and you might find a room to rent, some of them could probably use the money
.
