Re: Quantas pilot wanted to crash aircraft
If you read the article you can find out how to spell QANTAS!

Yup, the mis-spelling of QANTAS takes the cake over the OCD pilot who fought years of resisting the urge to "shut-off" the engines in flight.

Those crazy Aussies only get away with that spelling because it is an acronym.mag check wrote:Doh!! I was cooking dinner, surfing the web, drinking a beer, and obviously not paying attention to what I was typing

Ok, so old news regurgitated or... ?worked as a pilot with Qantas from 1966 to 1982
Perhaps a recent claim. Either way, this guy sounds psycho but I don't see how Qantas is responsible for it. When you work for major airlines, even back then, I imagine you would've been covered by loss of license insurance. Really, he should probably be battling it out in court with the insurance company, but if it was so long ago you would think there would be a statute of limitations in place.Mr Griffin struggled to resist an overwhelming urge to switch off his plane’s engines on several occasions between 1979 and 1982, evidence tendered as part of a worker’s compensation claim stated.
But I regress, why am I even posting this.. ?

You regress? You return to a former or less developed state? Or would you rather digress?

Dude, I've been regressing for years. Soon I'll be nothing but carbon flakes.

Re: Qantas pilot wanted to crash aircraft
I was thinking it was a job offer for a Qantas pilot to crash a plane.
I can crash a plane if there are no Qantas pilots available. I don't have a PPC, but if you are crashing a plane, do you really need one?
Then I thought... aahhhh! I f'd up on my comprehension.
Gimme another beer.

Re: Qantas pilot wanted to crash aircraft
This seems to be a fairly serious allegation toward Qantas. He tried to tell them that he was a danger to himself and thier passengers, but they let him keep flying. So he had to quit, which means he had no loss of licence insurance, no income, no career. Why would a company let someone keep flying after he tells them he is fighting urges to crash thier planes? I guess they didn't believe him and thought he was making up this disorder to be off work with pay.
"A QANTAS pilot suffering from a mental illness was allowed to keep flying for three years despite complaining of his urges to crash his planes.
Bryan Arthur Griffin worked as a pilot with Qantas from 1966 to 1982, when he resigned suffering from severe obsessive compulsive disorder, depression and anxiety.
After complaining about these urges Mr Griffin was examined by several doctors and was declared fit to fly. He received extended leave to be treated by doctors and psychiatrists but was allowed to return to the cockpit.
It was found that his condition had been exacerbated by continuing to work for Qantas.
Qantas had failed to understand his serious psychiatric problem and he should have been medically retired, a report from Mr Griffin’s psychiatrist said."
