Sounds like he did you a favour. I hope nobody rats him out by posting his real name or anything.....

Interesting thread...

Generally, I think you get what you pay for, much like the aircraft annual inspection.

There are medicals and then there are medicals. A young healthy pilot who is known to the Doc can probably be processed with a more cursory and thus less expensive assessment.
Most of us see the 'Medical' as something that we need to pass at all costs, and often may with hold information from the CAME out of fear of failure.
Some Docs will split the cost of the exam with the Medical Plan to give you a break, even though this is not kosher.

For a lot of us the Medical may be the ONLY contact with a Doc all year, and a cursory exam is of little value to our continued well being.

As we get older, a good thorough exam is essential to pick up the foibles of aging like diabetes, high blood pressure, gout, high cholesterol and prostate cancer, to name a few. These are all things that a good GP will be on top of, but a lot of pilots count their CAME medical as THE medical and don't ever bother to see a family doctor, and this is the reason to make sure that you get a GOOD Aviation medical.

If you are fifty and your CAME checks everything, including prostate and so on, and charges you $50, he/she deserves a good bottle of something in appreciation. If, however, you get a five minute look over, license signed and little else for $25, that is good for the pocket book but not for your health.
Docs who cut corners in their assessments will miss pathology, and will be flushed out sooner or later, when you fly into a building and scuff the stucco.
I am happy to pay $125 to $150 for a good medical I can rely on for my health, because I don't like to see another Doc for a "proper" medical the rest of the year.

Now, bend over, this won't hurt a bit...

$75 cash, scrip for the ECG. I know what's wrong with me, so the less he probes, the better. Besides, I don't think there are any sociopathic or mental health tests required to keep flying.

The CAME I went to charged different rates for medicals, depending upon who you worked for & if you were being reimbursed by your employer. I think he charged TC inspectors the most and private guys the least. :)

Bug,

Is that the guy who is up the road from PA, by the grass strip on the highway?

Having just been released from the military, I got a thorough check up, I feel fine. The Doc (FAA) I visited in Feb checked my ticker, asked more about what I did in the military and sent me on my way. All said and done in about 15 minutes.

$90, no TC fee...
If it makes you feel better, the doc up here in AK wanted $150, so it's just the same in the states as far as price variation is concerned.

Nark.. You must be thinking about the Doc out in Shellbrook thats west of PA. The doc im talking about is 40 mins straight south of PA in Wakaw. You can find him at the small medical building next door to the hospital. The price is right! Plus, he won the order of Canada, so always some interesting stories to be heard as well.
