Navajo going into KORD (O'Hare)

Post by PunkStarStudios »

HI Guys.
I do single pilot IFR for a company based here in the GTA on a Navajo.
We routinely visit quite the number of airports and fly the plane 3-4 days out of the week. Everything from Sarnia to City Centre to Ottawa to Montreal and Pearson, and several in the States when a Florida trip is in order.

In a few weeks I'm taking the plane into Chicago. Midway would have been my first choice but there's a need to be at the Hyatt right at O'Hare so KORD it is.

I know it's the 4th busiest in the world and all that - but do GA aircraft ever go in there - like a Navajo?
Just wondering what I can expect for FBOs locations and pretty much anything anyone can tell me.

I imagine there's a reservation system in place like YYZ for peak times?

Went there once in a Cheyenne, about 3 years ago. Biggest challenge was taxiing around, especially since the airport diagram in the NOS charts is crap. As I recall there is only one relatively small FBO. Don't remember anything about reservation slots going into it. Leaving the apron your first call is to "Metering" As I recall they will assign a taxi route that usually starts on a large painted number on the ground.

That's all I can remember.

That's a good place to start getting some info. Look at the "remarks" section, and also click on the "comments" about the FBO ($ignature) to see what other GA folks have said about it, and the airport (one guy took a Saratoga in.)

I don't think you will have any issues going in with a Navajo. Something else like a 150 or 172 may be a different deal as your max speed is likely below the stall speed of a number of aircraft using that airport. Otherwise you should just be another blip on the radar to atc. We have been into LAX a few times and had no problems. Not exactly sure where LAX ranks traffic wise but I would imagine it would be top 5 in the U.S I'm guessing. Definitely look into their arrival and departure procedures though.

Thanks guys.
I was looking at KPWK as well - pretty damn close and the taxi right to O'Hare from there may be less than the taxi time at O'Hare.
;-)

I'm a little confused though - I'll be flying down from Canada and looking at the US POE list, Midway and O'Hare are listed but not Chicago Executive (KPWK). Just for kicks I looked it up on fltplan.com and they mention there are customs available there.

Can someone confirm or deny that?

Something for consideration actually.
A citation pilot friend of mine mentioned they were billed a $300+ "ground handling" fee at Boston - I wonder what the fee would be at O'Hare ;-)

I found out that customs is available there on a Sunday.... Looks like that's the plan.

In a smaller business jet, we paid $975 for 4 hours parking/ramp fee + landing fees.

make sure it's worth it to be close to the hotel. The FBO is Signature.

Just make sure you are familiar with the approaches and airport layout.

I took a Baron into O'hare a few years ago - it wasn't a big deal at all. I asked for a progressive taxi on the ground and I'd advise you to do the same, especially as you're single-pilot. That place is an absolute maze, and if you screw up your taxi you'll get directed to the penalty box, (it was actually labelled on the ramp as such) and forced to sit and feel shame for a while before they let you continue. Funny story - as I was getting a progressive I wound up head-to-head with a 757, but it was actually them who screwed up, so they got the penalty box and I got to depart unmolested.

PWK has customs, and it'll get your pax downtown quickly - we go into PWK mostly now because it's more convenient than O'Hare. The Atlantic FBO also has delicious grilled sandwiches for cheap. Just sayin', yo.

I went to KPWK on the CJ2 last year, you can call Signature there and ask them about customs, it is a good airport.

I've been into PWK 3 or 4 times with a PC12 and it was really simple. Customs is available but it is expensive if you go in outside their normal business hours ($500+ I think).

My company had a PC12 into ORD the other day and I didn't hear of any issues. You will need a slot time which you can obtain from here: http://www.fly.faa.gov/ecvrs/.

Have fun!

I go into PWK and ORD every few weeks. Your best bet is PWK.
We always try to talk the pax out of ORD.

If you are single pilot consider taking an extra set of eyes and ears to sit in the right seat.
