Ice Pilots is a larf
I like the fact their AME looks like "Relic" from the Beechcombers
Did u see the episode when one of the 215's engines was leaking serious oil on a flight.
Mayday Mayday Mayday, We're landing on an iceberg!
They'll never get a Herc because that's too new. Isn't it First Air that has the only Civilian in NA? I like the old planes but seriously, maintaining a DC-3 for constant flight must be a bitch. Maybe that's half their fun as they say. Pull that prop through, spike the oil with gas and make er start. Radials!
The Lockheed Electra looks tempting. Not many fly that anymore. Atlantic in UK has 2 or 3.

About the 215's they were all stationed with the Ministry in the Sault back in the 90's.
I remember seeing about 10 there. The original paint scheme has red on yellow.

Minnesota's were Black on Yellow.

That's so cool. I never knew that. Explains why he drove that boat like a maniac.

Actually Lionheart only the 9 CL-215's owned by the Ontario Gov't were based in Sault Ste. Marie but 1 always remained in Timmins during the winter and at least 2 were in Dryden. The Yellow and Black is actually the Ontario paint scheme and Minnesota just happened to buy 3 Yellow and Black ex-Ontario 215's.

The Red on Yellow was a standard Canadair paint scheme and represented the Federally owned 215's. When the country wide 215 fleet arrived in the mid to late 80's the Federal Gov't bought 1 for every 1 the provinces bought. They were owned by the Federal Gov't but operated by the individual provinces. This arrangement lasted about 5 years and then the provinces purchased them for a $1. In Ontario the 4 Red on Yellow paint jobs were replaced by the Black on Yellow as they came do for a paint job.

Well I did say about 10! You gotta remember these were the days I was looking for "Prop Wash"
Some were in the hanger with scaffolding, so maybe these were getting paint jobs. Have a picture or two somewhere, I'll post it when I find it.

I kinda liked the original paint scheme better. Now they look like Bumble Bees scooping up all that honey!

G'day Lionheart

Did your father take part on the squadron's last mission (non-operational) in the 7th of May, 1945. 19 Lancasters from No. 626 (B) Squadron took part in dropping food into liberated Holland on that date. The squadron then repatriated former British P.O.W.'s back to England and also flew British troops from Italy back to England as well.

Cheers...Chris

Not sure. I know that story from the 626 website. They have a museum somewhat in the tower remains or hanger there in Wickenby. I have a picture of the entire squadron on May 25 1945 all sitting/standing in front of a Lanc.
Here's the official dedication and history sitehttp://www.626squadron.org

Very nice site there Lionheart.

Made for excellent reading and I was taken by the pictures of the Wireless Operator position, where the Marconi R1155 receiver was prominent.

I bought an 1155 in the early 60's from a fellow for $20. It was reputed to have beenhad been removed from a Lanc, and I converted it to use 110 volt house power, using it in my early days of learning morse code for my ham radio operator's licence. That receiver was optimized for CW, as it was the prime method of communications with the bombers.

In those days, $20 was a lot of lawn mowing, pop bottles collected, and begging for a "matching funds grant" from the grandparents.

According to Wikipedia:
The show has been renewed for a second season which will premier in fall of 2010. Filming for Season 2 was completed on August 02, 2010. Season 3 was greenlit on August 18, 2010.
The TV listings show it on Global tonight at 9 p.m. but I have no idea if it's Season 2 or just Season 1 that we saw on History Channel before.

According to the online TV Guide it's supposed to be a new episode.

Well, yes, it's new on Global because Global never aired it before. However, I do believe I read somewhere a lot earlier in this thread that while History would be renewing Ice Road Truckers, they didn't have the same interest in Ice Pilots because it was "too Canadian". So, maybe it's migrating to Global and what would be the point of airing the first season when the second is ready to go. Hell, I'll watch it tonight anyway. An Ice Pilots rerun is better than most of the other stuff on TV.

For Immediate Release
TORONTO, January 14, 2010— History Television announced today that the smash-hit living history series Ice
Pilots NWT has been greenlit for a second, adrenaline-packed season
. The extraordinary adventures of a group
of elite pilots in Yellowknife have captivated Canadians, making Ice Pilots NWT History Television’s top-rated
Canadian series in channel history. The second season is set to air in fall 2010.

“It’s been extremely gratifying to witness the success of Ice Pilots NWT and we’re thrilled that critics and viewers
have responded so positively to this homegrown series,” said Christine Shipton, Senior Vice President, Drama
and Factual Content, Canwest Broadcasting. “The ongoing ratings victories and dedicated fan base are testament
to the hard work and ingenuity of the team at OMNI Film Productions and our own Canwest executives. We can’t
wait to bring our viewers a second season of gripping exploits, brought to life by the unforgettable crew of Buffalo
Airways and the spectacular setting of our very own Northwest Territories.”

An instant critical and ratings success, the premiere episode of Ice Pilots NWT on November 18, 2009 marked the
highest audience ever for a Canadian series on History Television with 502,100 viewers (2+). The first season of
Ice Pilots NWT continues to attract viewers and achieve huge audience numbers for the channel.
On a weekly
basis, the two Wednesday airings combined (7 and 10 pm ET/PT) average over 300,000 total viewers (2+), and
also average above 140,000 in the A25-54 category and 125,000 in the younger A18-49 demographic

Watched the "premiere" on Global. Nothing new. It appeared to be the first episode of Season 1 that was on History Channel. I guess we'll have to wait and see when History Channel shows Season 2.

Canwest owns both channels, do they not? So basically the reruns on Global are promos for the upcoming new episodes on History.

The production company would deserve some serious kudos if they could go through a year's worth of footage and get a new season edited in a month and a half. If Global is planning on airing season two, they might be going through season one first as a preview for those viewers who don't have History, which would put the premiere twelve weeks from now.

Global is available on basic cable and OTA with rabbit ears from VHF towers all over, whereas History is a specialty cable-only channel not on basic cable. I guess that putting Ice Pilots on Global brings it to people who would otherwise not see it. Also, it would promote the kind of content one finds on History and maybe entice basic cable subscribers to spend the extra bucks to see more.

It also helps them meet their CRTC 60% annually, 50% 6 PM to midnight Canadian Content regulation in prime time without increased production costs ... just spend the time and money to make some new promos, put out a News Release ... CANCON problem solved.

Generally "Reality TV shows" are less expensive to produce than full-blown dramas, and Ice Pilots fits the bill nicely ... especially so since "its already in the can." Canwest has been bleeding to death for years, and now Shaw has bought it out, they still can't just stupidly start throwing good money down a rat hole to be eaten up. Ice Pilots is already paid for.

I confess to loving this show. Yes, some of the "drama" could be left on the side, but I enjoy the series.
