Really? I thought he just axed the Space Program. Or is he going to get Richard Branson and Burt Rutan to do it?

Now he just needs to be shot so it can be a memorial to him like the moon shot was to Kennedy...

You could probably have phrased that better :D

Mars is a good goal. And this is the kind of vision we need to be following to move forward. If you're not moving forward, you're standing still... Like they say: shoot for the moon, if you fall short you'll...er, wait a sec... :?

Yes I could have..

I am sorry for that comment. I do not support, condone, or endorser the shooting, killing, or otherwise any maiming of any US President or indeed any human being no matter how annoying, incompetent, stupid, or mean that individual is. I was just trying to draw parallels to the US Apollo program which probably would have been bogged down in budget cuts and bureaucracy had his unfortunate assassination and bold challenge not galvanized the US into undertaking the most ambitious project of the 20th century.

New goal?

Why don't they just say:

He un-cancelled the original mars program.
Rolled the target launch date back 17 years.
Cut the funding in half.

If the government can't manage health care, how the hell can they manage a space program.

Depends what return you want on your investment; advancement of human knowledge along with the opportunities of a new frontier, or a 100% heathly population (including all the hypochondriacs that run to the doctor with hangnails every other day).

That is probably true but it is still a worthy target. I just hope it can make it through the next president cause it sure as hell won't be Obama again.

I have it on good authority (CNN) that it was also announced as a new program… back when it was actually announced as an actually new programby President George W. Bush, back in 2004.
Just for the historic record, here’s the article from CNN in 2004:
http://www.cnn.com/2004/TECH/space/01/14/bush.space/
Bush unveils vision for moon and beyond
Thursday, January 15, 2004 Posted: 4:31 PM EST (2131 GMT)
WASHINGTON (CNN)—Saying “the desire to explore and understand is part of our character,” President Bush Wednesday unveiled an ambitious plan to return Americans to the moon by 2020 and use the mission as a steppingstone for future manned trips to Mars and beyond.
