Higher time, can't find a job
Hey all - is it just me, or is it difficult for those of us with a decent amount of hours to find work? I'm sitting at a hair under 5000, with some great experience but no luck so far this season. It seems like the lower time guys are having an easier time. Is it just me?
Re: Higher time, can't find a job
Just under 8000, not just you...guess its the 'over qualified' syndrome now.

Do the opposite of what some pilots do and and 'un-pad' your hours....
"So you have 1500TT?"
"Yes...." (I have that and 3500 more....)

Geez did I say that....? Or just think it....?

Re: Higher time, can't find a job
I've got close to 1900 now, and there are virtually no prospects for guys like me either.
Flying airplanes is easy, you just need to PAY ATTENTION. Finding a good job on the other hand takes experience, practice, and some serious talent.

Re: Higher time, can't find a job
I have around 2700, lots of MPIC, no job.
Re: Higher time, can't find a job
Ahhh the hours game, its why some will work for free...
How about this, we set up a forum here where over qualified guys can sell some of their hours to 200hr wonders. I'm sure there is no shortage of 200hr wonders who would trade their, cash, labor, car, sister etc for some extra padding in their book.

That almost sounds like the Kyoto Protocol of aviation
Good luck folks, it sure sounds dismal out there.

Re: Higher time, can't find a job
I'm curious as to the breakdown on those 5000 hours? (If you don't mind sharing). What kind of time is that? Turbine, PIC, multi, instructing, etc? In addition, what sorts of jobs have you applied for?JAG wrote:Hey all - is it just me, or is it difficult for those of us with a decent amount of hours to find work? Re: Higher time, can't find a job
It ain't just you!
I've been in BC for almost 3 months and I've got loads of time on everything between Twin Otter (floats) and B747 Classic (capt) and there is so little in the way of jobs and lots of experienced guys looking.
So I give up. I'm headed back to the last company I flew for in a couple days. Gotta do an IFR ride in AC's 767 sim and I'm outta here.

Re: Higher time, can't find a job
I'm at 330 hrs and willing to relocate..
Re: Higher time, can't find a job
3000 tt, 1000 float, 1000 multi PIC and I am ready to relocate....

Re: Higher time, can't find a job
Well that all depends..i'm finished working in the middle of nowhere for $2500/month..however if a decent job comes up regardless of what type i'd be interested. I'm seriously considering knocking 6000 hours off the resume and seeing what that gets me....

No I don't have any leads for you guys unfortunately. I've just found in the past I've had a hard time getting people to relocate.intel wrote:3000 tt, 1000 float, 1000 multi PIC and I am ready to relocate....

transat has hired
westjet has hired
porter has hired
some of their new hires came from jazz but others must have come from somewhere

Re: Higher time, can't find a job
We're still in a backlog situation, so many people out of work from the recession that it will take a while of recovering before most start getting seats.

Re: Higher time, can't find a job
I am one of those 280TT wonders (referd to previously) LOL...man do perspectives change.
I have been looking for work for about a month now, flying jobs are scarce unless you have 500TT, so dock jobs and dispatch are out there but not advertising. I think they have piltos showing up at the operators doors, thus no need to post a job opening. I don't know, I'm just plugging away everyday something has got to come up.

Re: Higher time, can't find a job
Nah don't mind. 90% turbine 75-80% PIC. Northern and southern, single and multi crew. Some floats - 400 hours roughly. I'm a BC kid.Switchfoot wrote: I'm curious as to the breakdown on those 5000 hours? (If you don't mind sharing). What kind of time is that? Turbine, PIC, multi, instructing, etc? mattedfred, I have been applying to Westjet for YEARS but nothing yet. Have done the tour, met the people that matter. Internal refs too.
I've been applying to others as well, in person to a lot of them. I'm not faceless.
Hope there's some guys out there faring better.

Re: Higher time, can't find a job
Finding a job in aviation is akin to the swiss cheese human factors model. Training, experience, and hours aren't enough. Thrown in is economic climate, networking skills, adaptability, personal situations, and just plain luck.
I have no idea how I got a job in southern BC with 375 hours from a resume I threw out years before, but here I am.

I always tell people, especially wanna-be's: flying airplanes is easy, it's getting a job where you get paid to do it that's hard.

Re: Higher time, can't find a job
somehow the ratio pilot/jobs must be around 100/1 with so many looking and so few called.
heck!! I stand with 17.000hrs many good years left in me and get not even a peep from potential flight ops. I guess the overqualified syndrome is real and applied .
