What to do in the event of engine failure from Goose Bay To Greenland? I guess you have life rafts and such, but that would be a very cold survival. How about engine failure over greenland?
It's always been interesting to me, are there any special precautions?

What do you do a night cross-country with one of your future students when the engine quits? All about calculated risks...some people are willing to take them, others feel no need to. Don't think i'd fancy shipping anything old and tired accross the pondloopa wrote:What to do in the event of engine failure from Goose Bay To Greenland?

Here's a story about why you want to wear a full immersion suit. These guys lost not one, but both engines in a Cessna Skymaster crossing Hudson Strait between Quebec and Baffin Island in December, and lived to tell the tale. Their plane went to the bottom, but they were able to climb out onto an ice pan after ditching. Unfortunately, they had no means of signal search aircraft and ended up spending a cold night on the ice in an area frequented by polar bears.

G'day Barney
The old control tower on top of No. 1 Hangar became the Greenwood Amateur Radio Club - VE1WN. The rest of the hangar was used by the Air Cadets in the summer for their camp. Our flying club was on the north side of No. 2 Hangar. I lived in BB 9 across from the mess hall. Still get back there on rare occasions. Most of the wartime buildings are long gone. The plans are to tear down the rest of the old hangar line. A new tower is replacing the one on top of No. 10 Hangar. It was a sad day when they tore the old ZX Theatre down. It must have been great to see Lancs flying everyday and then the Neptunes. Did you get much transient traffic back then?
Cheers...Chris

Re: Ocean Crossing in a Single Engine Plane
Hi Chris: I was also in BB9! We went back to ZX about 6 years ago and it was a real shame to see the way it was run down. I was on duty the night the BIG hurricane hit in 1954 with winds up to 135 MPH...until the annemometer took off.
Got a bit drunk on the roof of the SGTs mess during the lull when the eye went through.
Plenty of transients back then...USN Neptunes which always got zapped..Brit Shackletons...RCN Seafuries and TBMs...TCA DC-3s when YHZ was WOXOF. A few civvie a/c during bad weather days and of course our own Sabres, Clunks and the odd Vampire. We had a C-124 USAF garbage hauler bring in the "Spirit of St Louis" and Detroiter for the filming of the movie...got to meet Jimmy Stewart on that one! He declined going for a ride in the Tiger Moth though.
Great days fond memories..and some not so fond, but still a great base.
