CanJet Airlines is laying off more than half of its flight attendants at its base in Halifax.
A union representative said the 27 workers were shocked to receive their notices.
"It's quite traumatic," said Peter Baxter, national representative for the Canadian Union of Public Employees.
"These workers in Halifax, some of them have been through the restructuring with the company before with regards to their change from scheduled service to a charter airline, so there's a lot of people that were very upset."
CanJet got out of the scheduled airline business in September 2006 to focus on charters.
But the airline now says it has to cut 27 of 44 jobs because the charter business in Atlantic Canada is hurting, said Baxter.
"The primary reason that was given to us by the company president, Stephen Rowe, was the company's position in the charter market in Atlantic Canada and the lack of flying that was available to the company in this part of the country," he said.
"As they continue to grow their charter service in central and western Canada, I guess the flying in Halifax has taken a back seat to that."
The laid-off employees will be offered severance pay. There's also a moving allowance if they choose to relocate, but Baxter said that amount is minimal.
The layoffs take effect on June 3.

Come to Westjet, I'd be happy to see all of you. Canjet was a good spot to work, but Westjet is better. I know what you are feeling as I went through that in 2006. Good luck..
