Use of Aux. fuel tank on a Business Jet
Wondering about the legalities of installing a temporary aux. fuel tank to extend the range of a business jet. My understanding is that aux. fuel tanks are permitted for ferry flights only with a max of 2 people on board: 1 pilot & 1 navigator. Is that correct?
However, say that one wanted to take their aircraft of 2000nm range from YVR-HNL (think CJ4/Encore/LR40/P300). Can they, as owner/operator, install canvas aux. tanks and take themselves and their spouse/buddy under the ferry permit? Can they take more pax than just the two?
What about the return segment where the tailwinds may be enough to get the acft to SFO unaided by aux. tanks?

Ferry permits allow esstential crew only. In your example Pilots only.

Didn't think it would be permitted.
What then would be a feasible routing for the owner/operator of a limited range acft to go YVR-HNL? YVR-ANC-ADK-MDY-HNL?
I suspect that MDY would be difficult based on the AIP comments regarding PPR and limited night ops due to birds.

If you're planning ahead (which of course you would on a trip like this) getting the nessary ducks in a row for midway shouldn't be a problem. But Adak to Midway in a 2000nm jet would be tight. I don't know what's within 500nm of Midway.YVRtoYYZ wrote:Didn't think it would be permitted.

Still, though, why not just fly the owner to SFO, and then take a first class ticket from there?
or buy a longer range jet.
