Crash at CYKZ May 25 2010
Anyone have any info? I see a picture on the news of a plane on the roof of a building.
Re: Crash at CYKZ May 25 2010
Seems like it was a Cirrus with engine trouble after take off from Buttonville.

Re: Crash at CYKZ May 25 2010
News sites are reporting it as a Cessna.

Is that really a Cirrus tail in that picture, or a Cessna?

Re: Crash at CYKZ May 25 2010
Fire confirms one person is in the wreckage, but they can't get to them to assess due to structural hazards.
Building is 8885 Woodbine Ave, Thinkway Toys.
More video: http://toronto.ctv.ca/servlet/an/local/ ... ntoNewHome ... looks like a low-wing a/c... then again, any small plane is a Cessna, isn't it?

Re: Crash at CYKZ May 25 2010
kind of hard to tell with all the smoke obscuring the wreckage.
apparently it was trailing smoke before going in?

aw F*CK.
Horrible news. Doent look too good for the pilot/passagers (if any)
Can anyone confirm that it is in fact a Cessna?
There are reports it was trailing smoke...

If it is a cessna, it must be one of the corvalis models(old lancair)

12:54 Central time - Markham Fire Chief saying on CBC TV that there is "limited survivability" of the crash.
Sad.
Sad.
Say, what's that mountain goat doing up here in the mist?

Re: Crash at CYKZ May 25 2010
Terrible news..... particularly for YKZ management. Ya gotta know the anti-airport people everywhere are going to seize on this to proclaim general aviation is way to dangerous!
Re: Crash at CYKZ May 25 2010
I just got a call from an employee at TA 10 minutes ago (1400). From his account, the plane is a Cirrus, piloted by a renter out of Burlington. It was an unintentional low speed departure stall that got out of hand, or engine problem. Probably tried to turn back but couldn't keep up airspeed, resulted in a spiral onto the building. No word of fatalities. I had a flight there that was just called off because of it.

Which anti-airport people are you talking about? The ones are YTZ won't care if their problems are moved to YKZ!flyalmaguin wrote:Terrible news..... particularly for YKZ management. Re: Crash at CYKZ May 25 2010
Lindsey Deluce and her counterparts over @ cp24 mentioned in their own words how everything is very close to the airport discussing the incident!
How do you go 205 kts TAS on 32 gal/hr without turbos!
Re: Crash at CYKZ May 25 2010
Tragic. Heard about it leaving work at YTZ this afternoon. Lets hope for survivors, but if not... RIP.
Re: Crash at CYKZ May 25 2010
Have been at the airport all day since this occurred. The aircraft was in fact a Cirrus as DanWEC said. As it occurred, ATC cleared the aircraft to land on any available runway, but the pilot was unable to make the return back.
Circuits were restricted earlier on, but all flying seems to be back to normal now

Best wishes to the pilot & those on the ground...
If they don't come out of this, R.I.P

Re: Crash at CYKZ May 25 2010
It's weird how Cirrus's seem to have more than their fair share of accidents, despite the extra safety gear:

There is something really strange about those airplanes.3.3 times as many people were killed in Cirruses than in Cessnas given the same number of hours flown

Re: Crash at CYKZ May 25 2010
Indeed. I look after 1, and there is very little that I like about it. They also have very poor quality control at the factory. There is something really strange about those airplanes
If this was a stall/spin crash as the witnesses claim, then his only hope was to pull the chute, as that is the procedure in the flight manual.

Re: Crash at CYKZ May 25 2010
I am NOT attempting to speculate, but I do want to say.. Please, if you ever are unfortunate enough to have an engine failure in a single engine plane..please RESIST the temptation to try to turn back. Your stall speed increases dramatically in an engine out steep turn and you will NOT make it. They end up spirilling in every time. Its our automatic response to want to turn back to (safety), but Im pleading with ppl to resist the temptation and just drive it in. At least then, you have a shot..slim, but a shot.DanWEC wrote:I just got a call from an employee at TA 10 minutes ago (1400).
