It's been a bit ugly there today...I don't know what kind of Piper it is, but the GFA has mod ice for the route down to the sfc.

I really hope this turns out ok. Carwright is my hometown, and the community is reeling from the tragic and sudden drowning of a young and well liked young man.

Re: Searching for Labrador Plane
It was a Navajo... he was about 10-15 mins ahead of one of our Twin Otters that was going there as well. I saw him doing circuits in it yesterday when I was at work. From what I gather, he doesnt fly the Navajo too often. Usually in his Cheyenne but that's down for maintenance at the moment.
Also heard that this fellow's ELT was out for service and he left his SPOT behind too.
Rather sad as it's been a tough week and a half around here for a lot of people already.
His routing was supposed to be YYR-YCA-CE4 and I believe back to YYR.

Doesn't sound good. My thoughts are with all those involved. I feel I have been writing this too often these days

Saw the SAR Herc take-off at 5am today... not sure that they'll be able to see much as the weather is ugly here again today.
Got the Missing Aircraft Notice from YHZ on the Fax.
Apparently YYB had a target 60nm west of Cartwright at 0904 local. Also they confirmed that there was no ELT onboard.
The aircraft is: C-FZSD

Yes, that is the facts!! Holding out for good news!!
Re: Searching for Labrador Plane
Man O Man, hope it turns out OK but being realistic I don't have a good feeling. Saw him last time the same day I was acting PNF after givin some training to some of our D capt. PPC renewal. He came in YBX to pass his PPC on the PA-31. It was on Feb 28. He came with his Cheyenne 2 and passed his ride on some other's company 31. I still hope for the best.

WX is better today, beautiful here in Goose.
The Herc went out once and I believe one of the Cormorants went out as well.
And yeah, unfortunately it was PD. Hoping that they find something soon!

My condolences to the families.
The search for two men lost aboard a small plane in Eastern Labrador has ended. Joint Task Force Atlantic spokesperson Jeri Grychowski says crews found the downed twin engine Piper Aircraft late Friday evening. Both occupants were found dead. The aircraft had gone down about 100 kilometres west of Cartwright in a remote, wooded area. Crews had taken advantage of yesterday's clear weather and had continued their search well into the night. Prior to a break in the weather Friday, freezing rain and snow had grounded crews for 36 hours.
The men's identities have not been released.
My condolences to the families.

Re: Searching for Labrador Plane
The pilot was the first student at a flight school my business partner and I set up in central NF almost 20 years ago. We shared a lot of laughs over the year and a half that I was involved with that operation. I saw him last probably 15 years ago and once again regret that my career path kept us from connecting subsequently.
I flew a Navajo along the southern Labrador for a couple of years and remember how tough the single pilot gig was for a young guy full of piss and vinegar and little else. My friend had much more experience when he crashed last week doing that job. And he had a family. A newborn to boot. Not sure any amount of regulation or safety program or whatever will ever change the fact that those guys and gals doing the job day in and day out in the clag on the coast (both or three of them) face a much higher risk regime than I do now, fat dumb and happy at 390 as I decide what I'll order for room service that night.
I'm going to central NF later this week and revisit some memories and people I haven't thought of in a while. And I'll probably shed a weepy tear for three kids growing up without their father and for a wife who faces a struggle ahead that few will ever know of.
For those of you out there doing the job that I used to do, and my buddy used to do, which is working for a living as a pilot: take it easy, and retire at 60 with some really boring stories.

Findings as to Causes and Contributing Factors
1.The pilot conducted a visual flight rules (VFR) flight into deteriorating weather in a mountainous region.
2.The pilot lost visual reference with the ground and the aircraft struck the rising terrain in level, controlled flight.
Findings as to Risk
1.When an aircraft is not equipped with a functioning emergency locator transmitter (ELT), the ability to locate the aircraft in a timely manner is hindered.
2.Not applying current altimeter settings along a flight route, particularly from an area of high to low pressure, may result in reduced obstacle clearance.
3.Without a requirement for terrain awareness warning systems, there will be a continued risk of accidents of this type.
