Now how can I not develop a deep and abiding respect for a man with the good sense to post pictures like that?
I'm afraid I wouldn't have lasted long giving just name, rank and serial number to those Commies ... well to be accurate ... former Commies. If I had been in the Base Defence Force, I would have been cutting wire from the inside and holding the dog back to let them in.

Oh, how shallow I have become.

afd,
I have done my 20 years in the CF, with honour, and now, I am spending my second life discovering new languages and worlds. The pay is not bad, but the knowledge gains are tremendous. I just wish, that everyone had the chance to travel like I did, and get acquainted with these far away cultures, and people.
Let's have a drink sometimes. Sante! На здоровье!

My biggest frustration. The world is whole lot cooler than what we learn from the media. You quickly learn that we really don't have the answers that we think we have.
So much to learn about how to live life from other cultures. It's a pretty cool planet.
I see no benefit in going to smelly countries. I'll stay here in Sudbury where the air is as pure as a rainforest. (We export our pollution via the Superstack to parts east.)

NOT HALF A TRILLION DOLLAR'S wasted on starving artist's, Canadian content, [cut here] As oppose to 2 Billion gun registry, or the Billion dollar HRDC disappearing act. [paste up there^]studying the effects of prostitution on Chinese hookers (yes, $2 million on that gem) etc.. etc...
Well, I do not happen to be a big fan of the gun-registry either. To me, it is on the same list of unproductive anti-crime legislation as is a lot of Harper's "get-tough" legislation.

But back to the top line up there..... support of social programs.
How is it that people support universal military and police protection.... but should that protective umbrella be breached in some tiny way, and some poor sot gets injured.... how is it that we do NOT support universal health care to help him????
As a Vet I get healthcare, I'm not sure what your getting at.
As a tax-paying-working US citizen I pay for the social welfare of many that sit on their ass. As do my Canadian counterparts.
I have no problem helping someone when they're down; however I have a giant problem helping someone when they're down and don't want to get up. This is why I'm not a socialist, nor do I support anything that leans towards that.
Money talks a lot louder than spilled blood.
When President Bush sent us to Iraq, their was dissent among the masses, however other than the protest's what did the anti-war crowd do? In 2004 they reelected Pres Bush.
So now Obama is now the man. He has spent TRILLIONS on social welfare reform. More than what has been spent on both wars.
People are pissed because no longer it's the Smiths son who is serving and being affected, it's every working stiff paying taxes that Obama is bending over. Movements (ie the Tea Party) have actually organized and sent conservatives to office. MA Sen Reid, NJ Gov Christie etc...
America has seen where socialism has brought Canada (much started under Trudeau) and we don't want to be Canada. I will bet that Chariman Obama will not be re-elected in 2012. I'm so confident in that, I'll donate $500 to Joe if I'm wrong.

Oh, and I'm bookmarking this thread for when the Obaminator wins a second term. (I still have hope, even though Obama is placating the military/industrial complex.)

I flew aerial photos from the area, at 200 AGL. I had to go up to land...

I was getting at the masses of Fox-spurred Republicans fighting the health bill to the bitter end...

Well, perhaps... I don't pretend to follow his policy-implementation precisely, but from far away it appears that he is doing exactly what his predecessor did with respect to wars, bailouts, etc. Only the health bill is new.
A lot of "government takeover" seems to be related to "security".
Also the people claim to hate "government takeover", but once they get burned by bad meat, they want stronger food inspection; unscrupulous stock manipulators, they want more regulation; faulty products, greater import controls... etc.

LOL.... The feeling is reciprocal. Canada has seen where "whatever" has brought America, and I am pretty sure we don't what that, either.
3 years lower life expectancy, double the per-capita health care costs... more unstable banking system....highest prison population in the world..... 30:1 per capita murder rate.
What an empty suit the "Yes we can" chanters put in office....and he is almost a vocal bumbling fool if he can't read from the teleprompter ... he would have made an excellent TV news anchor for MSNBC or its parent company, NBC News, owned by General Electric.

This is from a Recon Marine in Afghanistan
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
From the Sand Pit it's freezing here. I'm sitting on hard, cold dirt
between rocks and shrubs at the base of the Hindu Kush Mountains , along the Dar 'yoi Pomir River , watching a hole that leads to a tunnel that leads to a cave. Stake out, my friend, and no pizza delivery for thousands of miles.
I also glance at the area around my ass every ten to fifteen seconds to avoid another scorpion sting. I've actually given up battling the chiggers and sand fleas, but the scorpions give a jolt like a cattle prod. Hurts like a bastard.. The antidote tastes like transmission fluid, but God bless the Marine Corps for the five vials of it in my pack.
The one truth the Taliban cannot escape is that, believe it or not, they are human beings, which means they have to eat food and drink water. That requires couriers and that's where an old bounty hunter like me comes in handy. I track the couriers, locate the tunnel entrances and storage facilities, type the info into the handheld, shoot the coordinates up to the satellite link that tells the air commanders where to drop the hardware. We bash some heads for a while, then I track and record the new movement.
It's all about intelligence. We haven't even brought in the snipers yet. These scurrying rats have no idea what they're in for. We are but days away from cutting off supply lines and allowing the eradication to begin. I dream of bin Laden waking up to find me standing over him with my boot on his throat as I spit into his face and plunge my nickel-plated Bowie knife through his frontal lobe. But you know me, I'm a romantic. I've said it before and I'll say it again: This country blows, man. It's not even a country. There are no roads, there's no infrastructure, there's no government. This is an inhospitable, rock pit shit hole ruled by eleventh century warring tribes. There are no jobs here like we know jobs.
Afghanistan offers two ways for a man to support his family: join the opium trade or join the army. That's it. Those are your options. Oh, I forgot, you can also live in a refugee camp and eat plum-sweetened, crushed beetle paste and squirt mud like a goose with stomach flu, if that's your idea of a party. But the smell alone of those 'tent cities of the walking dead' is enough to hurl you into the poppy fields to cheerfully scrape bulbs for eighteen hours a day.
I've been living with these Tajiks and Uzbeks, and Turkmen and even a couple of Pushtuns, for over a month-and-a-half now, and this much I can say for sure: These guys, all of 'em, are Huns... actual, living Huns.. They LIVE to fight. It's what they do. It's ALL they do. They have no respect for anything, not for their families, nor for each other, nor for themselves. They claw at one another as a way of life. They play polo with dead calves and force their five-year-old sons into human cockfights to defend the family honor. Huns, roaming packs of
savage, heartless beasts who feed on each other's barbarism. Cavemen with AK-47's. Then again, maybe I'm just cranky.
I'm freezing my ass off on this stupid hill because my lap warmer is running out of juice, and I can't recharge it until the sun comes up in a few hours. Oh yeah! You like to write letters, right? Do me a favor, Bizarre. Write a letter to CNN and tell Wolf and Anderson and that awful, sneering, pompous Aaron Brown to stop calling the Taliban 'smart.' They are not smart. I suggest CNN invest in a dictionary because the word they are looking for is 'cunning.' The Taliban are cunning, like jackals and hyenas and wolverines. They are sneaky and
ruthless, and when confronted, cowardly. They are hateful, malevolent parasites who create nothing and destroy everything else. Smart. Pfft. Yeah, they're real smart.
They've spent their entire lives reading only one book (and not a very good one, as books go) and consider hygiene and indoor plumbing to be products of the devil. They're still figuring out how to work a Bic lighter. Talking to a Taliban warrior about improving his quality of life is like trying to teach an ape how to hold a pen; eventually he just gets frustrated and sticks you in the eye with it. OK, enough. Snuffle will be up soon, so I have to get back to my hole. Covering my tracks in the snow takes a lot of practice, but I'm good at it.
Please, I tell you and my fellow Americans to turn off the TV sets and move on with your lives. The story line you are getting from CNN and other news agencies is utter bullshit and designed not to deliver truth but rather to keep you glued to the screen through the commercials. We've got this one under control The worst thing you guys can do right now is sit around analyzing what we're doing over here, because you have no idea what we're doing, and really, you don't want to know. We are your military, and we are doing what you sent us here to do.
Of course, Carter and Zbigniew Brzezinski and Reagan and Gates were just playing the cards they were dealt-unlike Bert, who is really behind this crap.
I think Bert stirs shit up just for fun.
Sure , most people think of Bert as just a funny puppet of questionable sexual orientation that teaches children to spell-but the little bastard really is evil.
